If your network-capable printer is not automatically detected by Windows, you will need to set it up manually. This will involve going to your printer menu, configuring a TCP/IP a port, and installing the drivers. Follow the steps below to add a network printer in Windows 10.
Then click Add a Printer.
Note: Once Windows detects your printer, all you have to do is follow the on-screen instructions for setting it up. If this is the case, you can stop at this point. However, if Windows does not auto-detect your printer, proceed to the next step.
In the drop-down menu for Standard Device Type, select the device type that corresponds with your printer brand. For example, if you have a Canon printer, choose either Canon Network Printer or Canon Network Printing Device. Windows will then detect the driver model. You will notice that once it detects the driver, your printer will be added to the list of devices in the Printer & Scanners menu.
Set up optional preferences. Type a printer name if you want to. Otherwise, click Next. In the next window, you could also set up set up printer sharing if you like (generally you should not do this). Once done, click on Next.
I have an MSI Katana GF66 laptop with W11 Pro and an HP OfficeJet 8720. My windows update is showing an installer error for an update for my printer. Install error: Install error - 0x800f020b for HP - Printer - 3.2.1.2285 can anyone please tell me how to fix this? I have been Googling it and there are lots of entries that are referencing Xerox printers which I do not have nor do I have anything from Xerox on my system. I have seen the issue mentioned many times on the HP community forums but when they report that a resolution has been accepted the green accepted box only shows the OP saying thank you and does NOT reference the actual fix steps.
No, I have not been able to receive an answer to my posting on how to fix the problem. I just tried looking at my account on the HP support forums and because they are doing maintenance. I cannot even sign in to that forum.
This being a problem that is occurring with the windows update I would think that Microsoft would know how to fix it as well as HP so I really would appreciate if anyone could post the actual repair steps to be taken to fix this problem.
This is getting annoying. The machine this error is on is not an HP machine, it is an MSI Katana GF66 and it is also an error with a WINDOWS UPDATE. That being said I cross posted my issue on the HP forums and they blew me off telling me to call support. This problem which is directly to do with a WINDOWS UPDATE is therefore a 100% Microsoft problem and needs to be treated by MS.
With these advancements in the Windows print platform, we are announcing the end of servicing of the legacy v3 and v4 Windows printer drivers. As this is an impactful change, end of servicing will be staged over multiple years. See the following Timeline and FAQ sections for guidance on the end of servicing roadmap.
A: Printer manufacturers can continue to submit printer drivers through the Partner Center hardware tool for driver validation and signing. However, in 2025 new printer drivers will be approved on a case-by-case basis for Windows Update or WHQL signing. Manufacturers and independent software vendors will need to provide customers with an alternative means to download and install those printer drivers.
A: Microsoft will continue to issue security fixes related to the legacy printer driver platform while the Windows OS version is still within Microsoft Support Lifecycle.
Done this myself, and the only ways to do this without user intervention (and boy, do I hate creating a bunch of word docs telling people what to click and where) is to either install the printer locally on the PC using an IP port, or to push with GPO.
I just deployed a GPO that is applied to one of our business units, but where only a group of people within that business unit would actually have the GPO applied. Maybe you can apply printer GPOs to groups. With printer GPOs you can get the printers to install and update their settings when updates exist - should be no harm there if they get a couple of extra printers. You could create security groups such as Finance Color Copier, IT Dot Matrix Printer, etc., assign users, and have GPOs that deploy the printers. If your OU structure would force you to put such GPOs at or near the top level of your OU structure, you can probably be OK but I would check up on ramifications of having lots of GPOs applied at once to users (maybe no big deal).
I still need to see the end results of what I did, as I never had a need in the past to deploy to groups instead of a particular OU. I have been assured by others more familiar that this is sort of a normal practice.
@homer-t-nacho-cheese You can use the local policy on the computer to add the printers rather than a domain policy but you may just want to use printui.exe or rundll32 to the printui.dll interfaces to achieve this relatively easy task. I did not write the article below but have passed along similar instructions since the creation of this method released in Windows 2000.
I normally do not use rundll32 for this. I call printui.exe but you have to be admin on the machine but you can also pass in a computer name and add the printer to a remote system using the /c flag but the client systems need to allow the remote call through the firewall as I pointed out back in 2004 printui.dll /ga option Tom's Hardware Forum . The good thing is now there is a policy to accept remote spooler calls Computer / Admin templates / Printers / Allow Print Spooler to accept client connections. Enable the policy to add the per machine connections to the systems.
If be move around to much you have multiple sites or you happen to have different IP subnets for your different floors/areas/departments you can use regular group policy but in item level targeting you can select IP address range and put in the range and it will only apply if that user is logging in from a device in that IP range. This also works with the sites option if you have your sites setup properly. If you do this then you also want the option Remove this item when it is no longer applied selected so it removes the printers if they go to another location (primary for laptops)

If you get a dialogue stating ADDITIONAL PORT INFORMATION REQUIRED, the printer is probably not connected to the network. It will ask you for a DEVICE TYPE, Standard or Custom. Leave the choice as STANDARD, GENERIC NETWORK CARD, and select NEXT.
If your computer was not able to locate a driver for the printer, or if you got the error above asking for additional port information, the next dialogue will ask you to INSTALL THE PRINT DRIVER. From the left side of the table, select the MANUFACTURER of the printer. From the right side of the table select the PRINTER MODEL. If the printer you are trying to install is available in the INSTALL THE PRINT DRIVER dialogue, select it and say NEXT, then FINISH.
Go back to the Install the Printer Driver dialogue and this time select HAVE DISK. BROWSE to where the print driver installed. It is often a .inf file you are looking for. Select it and click OK.
Most of the smaller, standalone printers will not require a code to print. Depending on departmental policy you may be asked to report how many pages you print to these printers and report this number to your business manager or other appointed person.
As before, remember that most Multi-Function Printers are going to require a departmental accounting code to print. This accounting code is given to you by your departments Business manager and is the same code you use for making copies on the machine.
The Canon Printers will require you to enter this code each time you print. This code is the same code you use to make copies. Just enter the code in the USER ID Field. Do not enter anything in the PASSWORD field.
The Xerox Printers requires the code to be entered. Once set it will prompt you for the code but once it is entered it will remain until you need to change it. For persons who need to use multiple accounting codes, you will need to manually change this setting each time before printing to a new code.
If the printer has previously been installed on the computer, fully uninstall the driver and other software before reinstalling. For more information see Dell Printer Uninstalling, Downloading and Installing Printer Drivers, Software, Manuals, and Firmware.
Microsoft Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson, is here. The Scripting Wife and I have been talking to various people from the Charlotte Windows PowerShell User Group all week about doing another Windows PowerShell Saturday. It is an awful lot of work, but I think we are going to do this again. The Windows PowerShell Saturday in Charlotte sold out within a few days, and there have been many positive comments about the event. That means that people found it to be a valuable experience. So we will have another Windows PowerShell Saturday. (By the way, if you want to have one where you live, let us know via scri...@microsoft.com.)
What this means is that if I type the exact printer name, I can use the Remove-Printer function directly. It also tells me that I can pipe a printer object to the function. By pipelining a printer object, I can use wildcard characters.
I usually begin things by using a Get type of command. So the first thing I do is use the Get-Printer function to see what printers are defined. The command is shown here:
