How can we keep our good brains, Human Capacity Retention?

One of the points that Havea brought up during the workshop is that Government services was really poor in keeping him abreast (up todate) with the latest technologies.

In effect, I think he was saying that if you want to stay sharp with technology then the Government was going to be a very poor fit for you. But Government has other benefits to offer ... I wouldn't know, I only lasted < 1 year.

Question:

What keeps you working in Government ?
What makes it worth your time to brush your teeth and get to work in the morning ?
What one thing (other than a decent wage) would make things better to stay in Government ?

Generally fishing for specifics on areas where Government works better and where we can improve to address some areas of staff turn-over, and improving the work place.

As you said Sam, aside from a decent wage, I work for government for the following reasons;

  1. Security is one of the main reasons, meaning, it is much harder for government to fold (as in close down) so it is better to be on the mothership so to speak and even if the salary is not as good as in the private sector, at least we know that come tomorrow, we will still have a job provided we adhere to all government policies and relevant laws of course.
  2. Government is much fairer in the way that for example in disciplinary cases, you are given the opportunity to tell your side of the story whereas some organisations in the private sector would just kick you out.
  3. Government has a very very generous leave arrangement for civil servants and also flexible leave arrangements including sick leave, vacation leave etc....
  4. There are quite a lot of training and development opportunities for civil servants which allows professional as well as personal development
  5. There is satisfaction in knowing that the work you are carrying out contributes to an effective and efficient Tongan Community - therefore making it a stronger nation....hahahaha
  6. At the end of the day it is the people who are "strategically placed" in government who can influence how and what the outcome of decisions would be.
  7. And of course I second what Ika has told you before, we just LOVE government.
I guess those are the reasons I and some of my government colleagues work for government.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Salote,

Yes, your feedback is very important.

I've been going through a number of case-studies of ICT initiatives in remote and 'disadvantaged' areas (i presume this has some relevance for Tonga) and one of the biggest problems they have had is in incorrectly selecting the technical / local partners to their programs.

In too many cases, the people they selected moved on.

So, as I can tell, it is important for us when we pre-select to be as assured of the longevity of that person in the post. Otherwise, we'll be back in six months needing to do more training, etc.

ciao,
