WE have a chance to dream, and to be educated.
Alfred and the DoC are co-ordinating two projects to connect the Niuas.
- Niuatoputapu Telehealth
- Niuafo'ou Telecentre (via ITU)
Both projects involve the installation of a
satellite connection
and one or more computers that will gain a
full internet
connection. Support is budgetted for at least 12 months of
internet access with modern computers.
Dare we dream of what is possible ?
I think it would be great for some of the Working Group members to be
involved in the above two projects for at least the following.
Ministry of Health ICT Staff - should be involved in both
projects as there are components in the projects that are directly
related to providing improved health services to outer-regions.
Technology / Infrastructure Working Groups
The two solutions provide a good sampling of the most expensive way you
can go about doing it, and the cheapest get it up version. Both give is
an option of seeing Real Life / Budget feasibility options.
The two options can give us ideas for how far and how quickly we can
extend the local / global infrastructure.
Home and Communities Working Groups
Talking with Alfred, the cheaper version definitely looks like
something that medium size communities such as Nomuka can actually
participate in for provisioning on-island extended health-care as well
as providing internet access.
If someone can be creative with the use of the 32MB slot we have with
TongaSAT, then the costs go significantly down.
Education Working Group
Again, both remote connection services will have education components,
so getting involved in the project will give us a better understanding
of what is feasible.
With the above connections it should be more feasible for students on
the Niuas to participate with programs in Tongatapu let alone the rest
of the world.
eGovernment
Wouldn't it be great if we already had our services available online ?
What can we offer now ? What can we look to offering in two months ?
