Formany people, this time of year is the traditional start to the outdoor cooking season. But before you fire up the grill, you need to think about two things. First, if you are happy with your current grill, what type of TLC might it need to get it ready for the summer barbecue season? Second, if you are in the market for a new grill, what kind should you buy?

If you plan to continue to use your current gas grill, it probably needs some basic maintenance to keep it running properly. For starters, use a portable vacuum or compressed air to clean out any debris that has accumulated, and use the compressed air and a special Venturi brush to clean out those spiders that love to live inside the tube that attaches to your burner and clog it up.

If you need to spruce up the grills exterior, you can use special high-heat grill paint from Rust-Oleum, (rustoleum.com) or Krylon, (krylon.com), to make it look new again and a product like Flitz Stainless Steel and Chrome Cleaner, (flitz.com), to shine up the chrome accents.

If your grill uses lava rocks or ceramic briquettes, these should be changed annually. Ceramic briquettes are generally the better choice because grease that drips on them vaporizes and they provide a better heat distribution. Lava rocks actually absorb the grease and can get rancid after a while.

If you are in the market for a new grill, you have a lot of choices depending on your price range and cooking needs. For many people, a basic gas grill will serve their needs, and grills by Weber (weber.com) or Char-Broil (charbroil.com) are still among the leaders in this category.

Manufacturers like Broilmaster (broilmaster.com) and Solaire from Rasmussen (rasmussen.biz/grills) now feature infrared technology, which is a high-heat method that locks in the juices in the meat. After the initial sear, the infrared energy cooks foods to perfection in minutes.

From high heat to high end, the Michigan made stainless steel grills from Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet (kalamazoogourmet.com) feature Hybrid Fire grilling system that can be used to cook with gas alone, or with their Grilling Drawer located above the burners loaded with charcoal and wood. Their prices start at $12,795.

You can also find portable electric grills from Kenyon (cookingwithkenyon.com) that are designed to be flame free and smokeless, an advantage if you live in an apartment or condo where open flame grilling is prohibited.

To make sure your meat is grilled to the perfect temperature, try the iGrill grilling thermometer from iDevices (idevicesinc.com) that uses Bluetooth technology to help you keep tabs on your grilling using your smartphone.
