I don't want to see the Currently Open Documents side pane, but I
can't find a setting to disable it. And when I go to the View menu,
the "Hide Currently Open Documents" option is grayed out. This is the
case whether I have one or multiple documents open. Even when I close
all but one document, the Currently Open Documents pane persists and
can't be closed. The only way to get rid of it is to quit TextWrangler
and relaunch.

Have you tried cmd-0? (that's a zero, not an oh).

That did it, thanks. Is there a menu option equivalent to the keyboard
shortcut?

Of course there is. The keyboard shortcut is after all, as one
might guess, a shortcut for a menu item.

Thanks for that. I was asking where the menu item was and what it is
titled. I'm unable to find it.

Hi,

it's under the "View" menu.
But when you're looking for something and can't find it, go to the help menu. In this case, type in "hide" and check the options.
That is how I found it quickly.

I believe what my fellow user is asking is, where is the menu command
that will hide the sidebar? Like him, I have one under "View", but
it's grey. As in, unusable. I too went to the Help function, and it
very helpfully pointed out the utterly useless greyed out View
command. Is there a way to make this command live, or a menu function
for this that is not grey, and if so, where is it?

Thanks.

What you both want to hide is the file list, so:

View -> Hide Files (or Show Files)

with a default key shortcut of Command-0.

(The Currently Open Documents panel is a section within the file list, not
the whole thing.)

Sorry, but I thought it was obvious after looking into the menu, knowing the shortcut was ⌘0.
But there is a grayed-out entry with the interesting comment in the manual:

Hide Currently Open Documents
You may ignore this command, which is present but always disabled.
