I'm using TextWranger to edit Python programs.  It's very nice, but
there is one serious problem I'm having.  I set my tab stops to 4
characters, but when I press the tab key, TextWrangler inserts a hard
tab character (ASCII 9) instead of four spaces.  Python doesn't like
it when you mix tabs and spaces for indentation, and so before I save
my file, I have to detab it.  That's very annoying.  Is there any way
to tell TextWranger to indent with spaces instead of tabs?

"Editor Defaults" gets applied for new documents. The Edit menu will only effect the currently open document and allows overriding the defaults.

Thanks Jesdisciple, that fixed it!

Anyone know what the difference between the two settings is and which one gets applied when?

In case the Preferences option doesn't seem to work, also try Edit > Text Options... > Auto-expand tabs.
