It sounds like you're asking about version control, which isn't
really the job of a text editor per se, TextWrangler or
otherwise. The classics for coding environments would be
packages like CVS, Subversion (SVN) and Git. Those, or similar
tools, are often included in or supported by integrated
development environments (IDEs). Google 'version control' or
'source control.'

Ah, the joys of manual editing, and of backups.

My own usual approach is this:

1. Work mainly with the remote files. (The exception is when I'm developing something new and wish to be able to quickly and frequently reload the site.)

2. Periodically download the entire site to a dated local folder. (When prodded by iCal, I download via the Fetch app, which enables dragging the site to the desktop in one step.)

I find working with just one save location and backing up that work less taxing than splitting my attention between local and remote. The approach is not automated, but it's simple and reliable.
