Still having crash problems
macOS 14.7.4

So strange things are happening these days with TextSoap (also 9.5.4) or is it my computer?

Scenario

I write a test file in TextSoap and save it.

In Finder I can see this file has got "open with" TextEdit,
I have not generally set files to open TextEdit.

If I venture to open this file (which has "open with" TextEdit), not with TextEdit but with TextSoap the app will crash.

If I set the default as open with TextSoap, it will be fine.

I will need to investigate. When TextSoap saves a text file, it does not take "ownership" of it. Rather, TextSoap indicates to the system it can read/write text files.
So the default for macOS is for TextEdit to open text files. If opening in TextSoap can cause a crash, it is worth figuring out why.

Are you opening the file within the Open File dialog? Or by dragging it onto the dock icon? Or some other way?

Mark,

TextSoap crashes when when I have a newly created tab which contains text that was copied from a different app or when a new tab which contains text with I typed. The important element is that the tab remains unsaved.

If I close the unsaved tabs or if I save them to disk, then no crash. If I quit TextSoap without without saving or closing the unsaved tabs, then TextSoap crashes.

Hoping that clears things up.

Only 10 min ago I sent a very optimistic email, which I had to delete.

I open TS files with CMD-O or with a KM macro, always same result, either it works, or it doesn't.

- - - - - -

Right now I tried to open a text file which has as it's default to open with TextSoap and the app crashed again.

If it helps, I could send this file via WeTransfer for example but I don't have the email address.

Just wanted to reopen a TS file (with default opening TS) which I had created 15min earlier and TS crashed.

I know from the past behaviour, if I'd insist in opening this file again, it would not work.

Nothing showing up in the macos console.

Latest crash reports

In my folder NNN there are three RTF files, CMD - I tells me: default opening with TextSoap.

1st step ====

When I tried in Finder to change the default opening to TextEdit, I got an error message saying you can't open this file because it’s either damaged or in a locked folder.

Then I went to open the first file (default opening with TextSoap) by double clicking it and it actually opened.

2nd step ====

checkbox for Locked = unchecked.

1st file: checkbox for Locked, toggled on and off, I could open it again.

2nd file: checkbox for Locked, toggled on and off, TS crashed

3rd step ====

Restarted TextSoap.

1st file: could be opened

3rd file: could be opened

2nd file: TS crashed

□ comment: these three rtf-files are very similar, the second file has about 2 kB, the other two below 1 kB. they were created a couple of days ago about at the same time.

TS crashed with 21 GB RAM memory (increasing), after a couple of minutes.

4th step ====

Disk Utility: First Aid: Operation successful.

trying to open 2nd file (CMD-O): TS crashed

In trying to replicate this issue, I did run into a crash -- but it did not behave as your description gave. However, it is one that seems tied to opening documents, so it may be the cause.
Anyway, the latest beta 9.5.5b1 (3226) should fix the issue I found, and (fingers crossed), it may be the problem you have been encountering as well.
Can you download the new beta and let me know if it resolved your crashing issues?

To download the beta release:

1. Hold down option while selecting TextSoap > Check for Beta updates

Alternatively, you can go to Preferences > Updates and select "Show beta releases" and check for updates.

OK, I have a new theory to test out. And with that theory & fix, a new beta release (3227).
Check for beta updates to grab this one and let me know if this version works better.

Hey and good day Mark,

Tested with both versions 3226 and 3227.

All files, which I mention here have the default opening for TextSoap.

I checked with a number of files and it seems that I have only problems with some RTFD files, but not all of them*, and I had no problem opening any RTF files (checked 6 rtf files).

*One RTFD file (to open with TextEdit) i chose to open with TS - and it worked.

Summary:

Today with this new test version, I could not find any RTF files which crashed, only two RTFD TextSoap files - among 4 in total.

- - - -

Today I worked on the pesky file (temporary2.rtf)

- duplicated the file & converted it from rtfd  ⇢ rtf

- removed a svg image (emoji) (automatically by macOS , and there was still this emoji left, which I removed manually.)

- this rtf file without any visible emoji and only the old text  → crashed TS

- duplicated the file & pasted over the old content a clean dummy Latin text  → TS opens the file.

This is all.

More work on the pesky file (temporary2.rtf):

As shown in the picture,

Once the file was converted to rtf, it still could not be opened.

Screenshot 2025-05-12 at 13.59.53.jpg

Something in the text seems to prevent TS to open the file and it crashed!

… until the original text was replaced with a dummy text.

So what is this?!

PS. When the text was copied to Pages there are 2 strange paragraph invisibles

macOS 14.7

TS 3227

Hey and good day Mark,

Update

The last post is misleading.

I was under the impression – wishful thinking – that crashes would now occur with only RTFD files, but this is not so.

Yesterday I came upon a normal RTF file and when I tried to open it, it crashed TextSoap.

So, sorry to say, not much has changed.
