Is there an option to do this? So I can have them on my laptop and my desktop?

Currently, there is not an option to use Dropbox to automatically sync the cleaner database between your laptop and desktop. This is an enhancement that we're considering for the future.

A work around is to manually use Dropbox.

1. Launch TextSoap.
2. Select Help  > Reveal Application Support Folder
3. Quit TextSoap

Then copy the textsoap7.textsoapdata file to Dropbox anytime you change either a custom cleaner, custom group, or MyScrub.
On the other machine, use the above to reveal the application support folder and copy the textsoap7.textsoapdata file from Dropbox to the application support folder.

Important: In order to insure that data integrity, TextSoap 7 cannot be running when copying the database file.

To piggy-back on what Mark said, you can (somewhat) speed this process up by using Hazel on both computers. Set up a rule in the Dropbox folder where you're going to store the file. The rule should be:

If ALL of the following:
    - full name is textsoap7.textsoapdata
    - date last matched is before date modified

Then:
    - sync into folder [your TextSoap application support folder].

Use the rule on all your computers. Although you'll still have to drag the changed textsoap7.textsoapdata file into Dropbox, at least Hazel will automatically "roll it out" to each computer when it's changed. (Come to think of it, you could probably set up a Keyboard Maestro macro to move the textsoap7.textsoapdata file to Dropbox for you with a keystroke, or perhaps on a daily/weekly schedule.)

These are definitely hacks. I agree with your unstated point: Dropbox synching is a "must" in the next TextSoap version! I would also like to see an option to synch keyboard shortcuts for TextSoap Menu (but this should be optional because some people could experience conflicts on different machines). I'm sure Mark will incorporate Dropbox as soon as he can.

Cheers,

Andy

Just wanted to echo this (now somewhat old) comment:  'Dropbox synching is a "must" in the next TextSoap version!'

I'm a new TextSoap user, and after my first couple cleans with the default cleaners, this capability is the first thing I looked for when I went to write my first custom cleaner:  "Before I write this here, how to I get it to sync to home and laptop?" It was quite disappointing to see this not supported. Just simple support via Dropbox (as in TextExpander, Quiver, CodeBox, and countless other apps) would be greatly appreciated.

I know that syncing/Dropbox support is a big request. If you really want, I can lay out the whole story of how it almost happened, how the solution I decided upon (Datastore) got yanked out from under me and how I had been looking at alternative approaches (like iCloudKit) ultimately didn’t work out.

After causing huge delays in the v8 product release, I finally decided to pull the feature (for the initial release). It wasn’t an easy decision to make.
All that said, I continue to work towards a solution.

Hi Mark-

Thanks for responding.

Speaking for myself, although I'd like this, I don't create
cleaners so often that this is a big hardship for TextSoap
usage, in contrast to most of the other apps I mentioned,
which are more like continually-edited notepads for which
a manual copy/replace would be a pain in the neck.

It seems to me that there are similarities between TextSoap
and TextExpander, in that both are text transformation tools.
So it might be useful to explore how TextExpander does it.
From the user's perspective, it appears all that's going on
is storage of some of prefs on Dropbox, but I realize there
may be more going on. It doesn't appear to be a "real"
sync solution (i.e., with atomic database operations on
the prefs file), but I don't really know.
