The first conference on OER for language learning
On March 6, 2021, the University of Kansas Open Language Resource Center, with some support from COERLL, is organizing the first ever conference on open educational resources (OER) specifically for language learning.
Instructors of all languages are welcome to attend, and hear how language faculty and other advocates in the open education movement are:
- creating customized lessons, modules, and textbooks,
- involving students in developing resources,
- bringing more authentic, inclusive, and culturally relevant content into the classroom,
- engaging the community,
- training a new generation of teachers,
- making course materials affordable,
- following best practices in licensing and fair use.
Languages represented include Chinese, French, German, Italian, Kiswahili, Korean, K'iche', Spanish, Turkish, and Ukrainian.

Shining a spotlight on students
The Texas Coalition for Heritage Spanish (TeCHS) and COERLL have launched a new Student Spotlight program. Teachers and faculty nominate students, one of whom each month is featured on our Heritage Spanish website.
Congratulations to Patricia Osorio, Johana Ortiz Suchil, Lesley Arias, and Abdel Barbosa - the first four students to be featured!

Thank you to Luis F. Avilés, the moderator of the Heritage Spanish community, for developing this idea to bring more attention to our students' great work.

SHL Hangout: Creative Ways to Teach Spanish for Heritage Speakers Using Authentic Media
February 22, 2021 at 5pm CST (3pm PST / 4pm MST / 6pm EST)
Facilitated by Lilian Cano, M.A. (University of Texas at San Antonio)
In this interactive webinar, participants will learn different ways to use authentic media (movies, short films, TV series) in Spanish heritage classes.
The use of authentic media creates an exciting learning environment where students engage in active listening and discussion while going over grammar, learning about Hispanic cultures, and developing their critical thinking skills. There are many activities
that the instructor can develop according to the media type, student level, and the desired learning outcome. It's an excellent way for students to bring in their families while learning about their own cultures!
