The Texas Digital Library (TDL) and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) are pleased to announce the Featured Sessions and full conference schedule for the Open Texas 2024 conference, “Global Horizons of Open Education: The View from Texas,” are now available. 


The conference committees, led by conference co-chairs Niki Whiteside, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Instructional Innovation and Support, and Dr. Tonja Conerly, Professor of Sociology at San Jacinto College, are working together to create an engaging program. We especially invite attendees to participate in the following featured plenary sessions:


Opening Keynote – September 25th 1:00 pm – 2:15 pm CST

Speaker: Elizabeth Braatz

Topic: Expanding the Horizons: Balancing Our Roles in Expanding Access and Knowledge of Open Education on Campuses

Join Elizabeth Braatz, a Board Member of the Open Education Conference and a volunteer mentor for the Student Advisor Committee within SPARC, as she emphasizes the importance of collaboration among faculty, staff, students, and librarians to effectively advance the various facets of open education.

Texas Open Education Community Town Hall – September 26th 10:00 am – 11:00 am CST

Hosted by THECB Division of Digital Learning, the Town Hall will dive into longitudinal data from the third biennial OER landscape survey of Texas institutions to help the community discover trends, challenges, and opportunities. Attendees will engage in breakout discussions to explore how we can amplify the impact of OER and chart a path forward. THECB Digital Learning staff and the Texas open education community will build on the national conversation organized by SPARC, DOERS, and WICHE earlier this year that asked the question, “Do We Need a National Open Education Strategy?” and will be joined by Nicole Allen of SPARC, Liliana Diaz of WICHE, and Dr. Kathy Essmiller of DOERS.

Closing Plenary Panel Session – September 27, 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM CST

Topic: Open Horizons: Texas, National, and Global Perspectives on the Open Education Movement
