Dear Professor Dutch,

My name is Brian Deering and I represent a group of academic researchers scattered across the country being lead by Professor Frederick Bergerson (fberg...@whittier.edu), Whittier College (www.whittier.edu), Whittier, CA. We are capturing certain unclassified intelligence documents from the a specific period of the Vietnam War and plotting these events on Google Earth.

I have been confounded by the military's map grids and coordinate system. After some online research I developed an understanding of MGRS and actually found several formulas for conversion.

That said, I'm terribly excited to have found your Excel conversion spreadsheet (and a still functioning link). I've downloaded and used the Spreadsheet. IT"S GREAT. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Our effort, still in the early stages, is very Web 2.0; collaborative, open and unfunded. While our scope is still narrow and short-term our longer term intentions are to open this effort by deploying our own Wiki on the Web and involves multi-disciplinary adults, many with their own Vietnam War experiences, and graduate and undergraduate students. Some of our members are active contributors, some are observers, and each gets to chose their own status as meets their needs. It's all very experimental and very exciting.

We applaud your willingness to share your expertise with the Web Community and, on behalf of our group, I invite you to join our group. We communicate mostly through  Google Group. Our list traffic is minimal. and no one has assigned responsibilities so you're welcome to be an observer or contributor according to your needs and availability.

Thanx,

Brian Deering
