Great talk from a Chef colleague, Michael Goetz, on a workflow around image creation and Chef - a realistic approach towards configuration management using core OS images for things that don't change frequently - an approach which I also embrace and advocate:

We could use Packer to build Docker images, but then we lose metadata and layering (for now!)

what is the significance of losing: metadata and layering?
