What is the lstm.train file used for?

In the "Makefile" file of tesstrain, there are parts where the following command is executed:

tesseract --psm 13 lstm.train

```

Why does it run tesseract with the lstm.train file? If I am running this command for Japanese text, can I use eng.traineddata, or will I have to specify `-l jpn` in the command?
