You are probably using a wrong traineddata file i.e. 3.0x version file with latest 4.0x code from master branch.

You should set the TESSDATA_PREFIX environment variable to the tessdata directory from the tesseract-ocr.

e.g.: export TESSDATA_PREFIX=/path/to/tessdata
