Tesseract much more effective when run from terminal than from API

Hi guys,

So I'm trying to put tesseract into an OSX app I'm writing. When I run tesseract from OSX terminal with the default options, everything seems to work pretty well. However, when I run tesseract from the API example here https://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/wiki/APIExample it seems to work much worse. Could anyone help me with why this might be?
