I am trying to add some pre-processing & post-processing for my scenario. I read some papers and it seems the steps could be:
noise attenuation
orientation correction
binarization
segmentation
spell check
I am wondering whether tesseract already contains some?

This wiki page describes what Tesseract does (and has suggestions for others like deskew):
https://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/wiki/ImproveQuality
The wiki actually has a ton of very useful information. If you haven't reviewed it carefully already, you should go and do it now.
