So my iPhone has had this message on an all black screen: support.apple.com/iphone/restore. My phone does not turn on or update using the methods seen on YouTube. I tried to restore it but that also didn't work, it gave me the unknown error screen when I tried to restore it. I am going to get a new phone tomorrow but I just want to know why does this happen to an iPhone? What could have caused this and why wouldn't it even let me restore the phone all together?

For iPhone users, seeing their iPhone stuck on restore screen (also known as recovery mode & support.apple.com/iphone/restore) is not some uncommon, especially when they need to restore their devices or update to the latest iOS version.

When your iPhone stuck on restore screen/recovery mode, iTunes can help as it can restore your iPhone by natural. But please note that iTunes will clear all data from your iPhone once you confirm to use it.

When your iPhone stuck on restore screen, 6 methods in this article can get your iPhone out of the restore mode. And to exit it without manual operation, iMyFone Fixppo is recommended as it supports to get iPhone out of restore screen in 1 click for free. So, free download it to have a try now!

Ultimately I have advised the phones owner to take it to Apple. Apple had previously wanted to wipe the device because it was bootlooping. Now that I have the phone at the restore screen I think they will just replace the home button and screen.

Thanks for the response. I didn't realize these were a thing. So there must be someway to simulate a home button press through the charge port. So you could probably do something simalar over a usb with the right software. I wonder if such a thing exists. I'm in Australia so ordering one of those in could be pretty expensive. The customer is pretty desperate thought so they probably pay it. Thanks.

They may be able fix the home button, so that it works again, but will probably not detect fingerprints any more. Sometimes the IC Turtle chip gets dislodged from the home button flex. There is also a Bluetooth Home button work around that can be installed, it is called the JC home button, google it o find out more.

Thanks! I didn't realize this existed. I have tried an external Home Button dongle and it didn't fix the issue. I believe the phone is ignoring external devices while in this weird recovery mode. Do you have any idea if the JC home button fix will run into the same issue? Would the device also ignore bluetooth input?

Not true. Starting with the iPhone 7 line, the button works differently from other models. There are bluetooth options but you would have to be able to pair it and that's not possible in setup. Going to Apple is the only way to fix this.

I have followed the troubleshooting steps on that page to no avail, and there's no mention of passcodes there. I've tried this on the usual sync PC and on my laptop. I'm hamstrung a little in that it's an old device and none of the side buttons work anymore so I can't try power off / reset but I've tried letting the battery run out and restarting it to no avail. I do still see pop-ups for my calendar appointments over the iTunes sync image. I've tried pretending the keypad is there and entering my passcode but no luck.

What does that screen mean? Is there any way to forcibly reset the software in iTunes even though it won't connect because of the passcode, or is there any way I can reset the software from outside iTunes? (I can't find anything on the Apple support website or in the manuals.)

I've seen this thread on MacRumours which has the same problem; it sounds like it was fixed by resetting the iPod. As above my top button is broken so I can't do that, but I did try letting it run flat which I assumed would do the same thing and that didn't help. There's also this thread in the Apple forums but there's no solution there: just that the restore worked the next day, whereas I can't even get that far.

I tried this with an iPhone which I believe was in much worse shape than this and it worked. In my case my phone never got past the Apple logo and would shut down shortly after. Even a hard-drive restoration company wasn't able to access the data, yet the recovery through iTunes did work, so there is hope.

All you need to do is press and hold the home button on the iPod while connecting it to the PC. iTunes should detect an iPod in recovery mode and allow you to recover the device (again, this wipes out all data completely).

If your iPhone is displaying a black screen that says support.apple.com/iphone/restore and connect to iTunes - identified by the iTunes logo (computer) and USB cable, the device is going into the infamous iPhone Restore screen, aka the iPhone Recovery Mode.
