Does anybody have any experience with PSE&G's TOU (RLM) rate plan?

Yes Steve. Search the forum as there are a few posts. I have also posted a spreadsheet where you can calculate the roi if you know your consumption.

Great - thanks.  The electrician is in my garage now finishing up my HPWC.  Latest word from Paramus is it's on the assembly line nearing completion (whatever that means).

It's taking me forever to setup the RLM plan at my house. I've visited the PSEG website, called the number and spoken to about five different people, each sending me to another department. I was finally directed to someone in their solar group who knew what he was doing. He put in the order for an RLM meter. They put in a new meter but of course, it wasn't a RLM meter, just a digital one. Called again this week and they say I've been fast-tracked for the new meter and that someone would call me soon to get it put in. That was a few days ago. It's been almost two months of this runaround. Really disappointed. If I could change to another electricity service provider, I would probably have tried that a few weeks ago but I guess we're stuck with PSEG.

It's a headache to get an RLM meter installed at your house. No one at PSEG knows what it is.

I finally got it installed in August last year, but it was not programmed. It was registering just one rate - the most expensive rate 24/7. 3 months later I finally got someone to swap it for another one. I was billed the high rate for those 3 months. I asked to recalculate the usage, but they said they would do that only if state inspection concluded it was a faulty meter. So, 5 months later still no conclusion.

However, the new meter is registering 3 tariffs. I know only "on peak" and "off peak" rates, but I never understood what the 3 tariff is. It is usually under $5.

Oh, and no one knows how to read this meter either. PSEG has sent about 6 different people, with appointments, to read my meter. Every time they come, they have to call in and ask their supervisor how to read this meter. Usually they sit down wait a while and then they say they will send someone else.

Wow, sounds like you have really bad luck. I was fortunate to get someone knowledgeable the first time I called about this. I am not having the problems you're having.
I wonder if you can ask for a supervisor or someone more knowledgeable to get everything corrected? This sounds very frustrating, I'm sorry...

I'm surprised you all have had such a difficult time with PSEG for RLM meters. I had no problems getting it installed and have had it for around 2 years now. I average in the range of 11c - 13c per kWh each month. Worked out well - without it I was paying 19c kWh. This of course includes both the supply and distribution charges.

Ankoor:

What part of NJ are you in?  I pay 14.5c/kWh (supply+dist) in Hunterdon Co with JCP&L - no RLM meter. (Of course I have Solar City panels too.)

Near Princeton. Nice that you have solar. Hopefully I can swing that soon in my house too. With solar, I hope to pay $0 though 😊

I also had minor issues with PSEG when they installed my RLM meter but they eventually got it right and I was very happy with it. Charged at night, put dishwasher on a timer so that it started during the off-peak at night and we mowed electrically, washed clothes, etc. on the weekend anyhow, so it really made a difference. We had our solar panels installed last year and they installed a bi-directional meter. The meter's display didn't show the on-peak / off-peak usage so I feared that I lost the RLM service but PSEG assured me that they were still able to keep track of it. Sure enough, my monthly statement showed my RLM service had continued uninterrupted and it detailed my in-use, my out-use (i.e., my excess solar production going to the grid) for both on-peak and off-peak. Very happy with it all.

Glad to hear that RLM and solar are compatible, I always wondered.

Dan, do you know how it works if you produce excess on-peak solar and don't use it during on-peak hours? Does it carry over month-to-month? And then you get a credit at the end of the year at a low rate for each kWh? Are you able to monitor the buckets at all?

I was thinking about doing it but as 5/7 of solar is during the week I don't think we would use it all during on-peak hours (as currently we generate 100% of our home's usage, not our Tesla's though).

Hi Martin - excess on peak carries over from month to month, so you basically use PSEG as your battery backup. I'm coming up on my first anniversary of having my panels in production and I actually banked a ton during the year (I overestimated how much I thought I would use during the winter), so I'm using it up by charging my Tesla during the day for the next few weeks. Any excess at the end of the year is cashed out at the wholesale rate, which is about 3 cents or so per kWh, so it's better to use it up instead.

PSEG's monthly invoices have a grid that shows my in and out use for each month during the production year and provides a total of what I've banked, so it's quite user-friendly and makes it easy to monitor.

Dan the Man, do you have a picture of the meter.  I had mine swapped yesterday.  Same thing, it does not show on/off peak.  Want to be sure I have not lost RLM.
