I mentioned the Delaware incident to George Blankenship.  This is his response.

Dear Ira,

Thanks for the email.  What you are describing is an unfortunate situation that we are aware of.  It does not happen much, but it has happened now and then.  It is very unfortunate.  There's not really much we can do about it.  There needs to be free and open access to the Superchargers so Tesla cars can drive right into them, and in most cases, the Superchargers are out in the middle of a large parking lot where anyone can access and park.  From time to time, someone with an ICE car will feel it is their right to park in those spaces, even if they are not charging.  We hope this does not happen often, but there's really not much we can do about it.

We hope common courtesy will prevail as we go forward and install more and more Superchargers.  We believe most people are good at heart and will not make this an issue.  It is unfortunate that someone occasionally will, but it would not be good for our Model S owners if we installed gates on the spaces and/or required some sort of passcode in order to open a gate to where the Superchargers are located.  This would make everyone have to remember a passcode or carry some sort of key to get in.  That is just the opposite of what we are striving for.  We want Supercharging to be fast, easy to use, and free.  This will not be the case if Model S owners have to remember a passcode or carry a key with them to get into the spaces to charge.

I hope this helps explain our thinking on this issue.

Best regards,

George

Dear George

I am writing as a member of the NJ Tesla Motor Club and stockholder and you were kind enough to respond to an earlier e-mail I sent.

We are all thrilled about the supercharger news but I thought I would point out an incident that happened to one of our members in Newark, Delaware.  A fellow with an ICE car blocked access to the supercharger on purpose and our almost got into a confrontation that could have become violent.  From reading the forums he is not the only one with this experience.

Is there any way to prevent this physically and/or legally?

Thanks for your attention

Best

Thanks George

I hope you're right.   I agree that when the number of chargers increase this should be less of an issue.

Much appreciate your quick response!

Best

Perhaps some appropriately worded signage would help...

I understand they want them to be fast and easy to use, but that's not the case when they're all ICE'd...it must be a legal/cost issue to install a gate or barrier. Probably the best bet is to just install them far from the front of the lot. Not as convenient, but better than them being blocked. I also do not believe this is a rare occurrence, both times I've visited the Delaware station, there was an ICE in one of the supercharger bays. I agree though, hopefully more chargers will mean less of a problem.

The only time we've passed through the Delaware rest stop since the chargers were installed (can't remember when, it was taking my bro back to college in DC one weekend), all 4 bays were taken by ICE cars. All of them were blocked. Not good.

This problem would easily be resolved if they put the chargers farther away in the rest areas.  People are too lazy to walk so no one will bother to block you in.  Also it makes it less obvious for people to notice,  but tesla wants to draw attention which is the problem they won't admit.  It's simple farther from the entrance, no hassles.

They could still get the attention with extra tall signage while putting them at a distance to the entrance so no other vehicles ICE the Teslas.

It was empty when I passed by a few weeks ago (except for the Tesla charging)
