So here in Bloomingdale, they like to do inspection sticker checkpoints because we have so many drive-through commuters.  I was hoping to have some fun when this happened, but turns out my wife had the chance when I was out of town!

She came up to the check point and was waved to pull over, unfortunately there was a line of a few cars and she had to sit there for 10-15 minutes, making her late for work.

Finally a cop came up and was like "Where the hell is your inspection sticker?", obviously confused that someone with such a nice car would be so stupid as to not have an inspection sticker.  She says "Uhh, it's a Tesla, its all-electric, there are no emissions, so I don't need to get them inspected".   He just stared at here for about 5 seconds, then walked around the car two or three times looking for exhaust or gas caps or something.  After checking it out for awhile, he came back and said "Well, never mind then, free to go".

Damn, I wanted to be the one to see the cop's face...

The cop will probably find something to ticket you with since you are a guy :)

Jared,

They did this same thing to me over a year ago in Bloomingdale. I can't believe they're still that uneducated. Do you have front plates? I do not, but they didn't mention anything about that (maybe they were embarrassed?).

Yeah, I have a pretty custom front plate mount using thelaw ( http://torkliftcentral.com/the-law/ ), a metal license plate frame with a couple bottom drilled holes (same frame on the back ) ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Matte-Black-Tesla-License-Plate-Frame-Laser-Engrave-Stainless-Steel-w-Metal-Cap-/171374161760 ) and a ton of bolts and washers to move it down to where i wanted it.

The car is enough of a cop magnet, nevermind my illegal tints and having no front plate.

Picture attached.

I saw a white S in Chatham on Saturday and it had an inspection sticker in the widow.  The expiration date looked to be 3-17.  Anyone here own that car and could elaborate on how you ended up with the sticker?

I was recently stopped at the Lincoln Tunnel  or no front plate and inspection sticker. I was sent on my way with a verbal warning by a very Tesla friendly police officer.

Here is something regarding no inspections for 100% electric vehicles that you can print to have available in the glove box for inquiring police: http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Inspections/VehiclesExempt.htm

And it is precisely for this reason that I have a sticker. I just don't have the time to deal with this type of government activity.

Ditto

I was in Chatham/Madison 2 weeks ago and yes I have a sticker b/c at the time I got mine I was unclear whether I needed one and got it (plainfield) anyway to avoid the hassle.

That was me.
After speaking with an officer friend here in Summit, he recommend that I just get the sticker because he said I would get stopped a lot without one.  That and the front license plates are easy to look for and when something doesn't look right, the car is a target.  His words.  Until there are more EVs on the road and the police departments are enlightened, it's easier just to go with the flow.
I went to Plainfield.  Only months later did I realize that the sticker should read 12 - 17 for month and year of next inspection.  (I took possession of the car in December 2012)

Danielle,

Thanks for solving the mystery and giving us a little insight into the mind of a police officer.  I was talking to one about 6 months ago at the car wash in Madison and he had no idea what the car was.  Now that there seems to be more Teslas on the road than Panameras, I think a lot more of them are aware of the car, but they can still use it as an excuse to pull someone over.   I am resisting getting one because I like the clean look of the windshield without it.  Although with my plates (NOFUMES and NOXAUST) it would be fun to pull up the inspection station with both cars and see their reaction.

Yeah this is why I got the plate, but no inspection sticker I want to hold out on.  I have 35% tints on my windows anyway, so there is also that.  Just need to roll them down before they walk up to the car.

My townie cops I'm not too worried about, and I'm sure there will be more education as more teslas and leafs get on the road.

Was interesting to hear that there are over 800 owners within 25 miles of the Paramus location.

That is great!  I took delivery January 2013 and I went to get it inspected and the cops face was my face when they said you can go at the inspection station in NJ after a 5 min huddle. I had received all this inspection registration stuff from Tesla only to find out that with the new laws only testing for emissions in NJ, I would be sticker free.... gas station free... life is good!
