A Culture War on Wheels

Elon Musk’s Cybertruck is inspiring a lot of strong feelings.

yeah, read that ( my wife has a NYT subscription  - not me).  Whole anti-EV thing and particularly the CT is silly.

here is the wsj on yesterdays earnings call - https://www.wsj.com/business/earnings/tesla-tsla-q2-earnings-report-2024-3e849b36?st=07tqga2w78rqe4u&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

The original version of the article included

The Texas-based car company reported net income of $1.5 billion for the quarter, a period in which global vehicle deliveries also fell but not as steeply as some analysts had feared, helping to fuel a rebound in its stock price.

except if the WSJ had only looked at the published numbers, deliveries were actuall up by almost 15%

Saw that a couple days ago. I have to say that I really like the CT and have one on order (since early 2021). Not sure what I am going to do when it comes time to order the lower-spec models (I have a dual motor variant on order; I did receive an email telling me I could order the CyberBeat version, but I am not spending $100k on a vehicle). I really like the Rivian R2 and R3, and by the time I get ready to replace my Model Y, they should be on NACS natively, which is a requirement for me. Elon does piss me off - I used to be a big fan but not so much now. That said, if Tesla were to make a compelling vehicle in the future, I would not eliminate it simply because 'Elon'.

I hear you Dan, I am really surprised by the turn he has taken and don't feel the need to put any more money in his pocket, which is why if I do buy another Tesla I would look at a used one. Rivian's seem to look more appealing now and given he is opening the charging the networks, which is one of Tesla's biggest competitive advantages, makes buying one less necessary.

In terms of the Net Income, until recently, most if not all of their Net Income was a result of the credits they received. It looks like 33% of their NI is because of the credits. Until they can execute better on their other initiatives, it seems like with the pricing pressures and lack of EV sales, it will be more difficult for them to generate a lot of cash. Their margins aren't that high.

I have owned 3 electric vehicles. Besides Tesla Rivian and Fisker.
Tesla software is superior to the others.  Still best EV

You're focused too much on Tesla as a car company - it's much more than that

I feel like when 85% of our revenues come from your car business, you are a car company unless you can generate meaningful revenue from these other streams and you can execute on them. Their execution on their cars have been sub-optimal thus far.

Amar

I agree, although Elon would certainly like to take the focus off of the cars, since they have allowed their fleet to age, even with the Model 3 updates and upcoming Model Y refresh. The lack of a less expensive option is going to hurt them going forward - I feel like if they could have something that undercut the other companies offerings, they could have made hay. But I guess that's less important than robots, autonomy and screwing around on Twitter. Fortunately, their energy business seems to be growing by leaps and bounds.
