Does anyone have both Solar net metering and use the RLM/Time-of-use rate plan with PSE&G? How do you make it work?

Before the Tesla we've been generating around 100% of our usage annually with 6.1 kW of solar. Now the Tesla will be adding to our usage, hence looking into RLM for off-peak charging. My understanding of RLM is both your exported and imported power are separated into peak/off-peak buckets. This seems like it could be problematic as 5/7 days of your solar exports is now "peak", and you may not be able to use that much during peak hours (ironically, encouraging you to use more peak power).

So the big questions is if you generate a surplus of "peak" do you get credited at a higher peak rate, or the (very low) wholesale rate? Seems like it wouldn't make sense unless you're meticulously monitoring your power generation/consumptions through some software (or not generating much solar), does anyone bother with it?

HI Martin,
I have RLM with PSEG but no solar. I have a vague recollection that the two were not compatible so when you do find out, please let us know.
On a side note, you may want to consider adding a powerwall to the system so that you'd be fully covered at peak time between solar and PW. At night you'd be charging the car at off peak and, if needed, top up the powerwall. This way you'd minimize or eliminate peak usage, have a battery backup for outages and use only some from the grid at off peak rates.

I've had PSEG solar and RLM since last June and can confirm that both exported and imported power are separated into peak/off-peak buckets. So far I have generated more peak power than I used and have used more offpeak than I generated. I have a 4kw system so I'm betting I won't generate much surplus peak power during these winter months, though. If you have a surplus at the end of your generation year, you get credited at the wholesale rate, not the peak rate. In other words, you're better off using any accumulated peak surplus before the end of the year.

I thought about getting a powerwall but solely for replacing my gasoline generator. The way I see it, I'm using the grid right now as a free and very efficient means of storage. Any surplus that I generate goes into the grid and I get credited for it, and if and when I use more in a given month (which may happen in the winter), I use those credited kwhs to offset that usage.

Let me say this much Dan the Man is lucky. I am on PSE & G we have no such thing offered here. It use to be my excess solar was credited into the
next month no more, that went away. If I use more than I generated I pay. Well now it does not matter as I had installed a HPWC so my car is plugged in
and charging.

I had 30 panels from BP which did not cover my usage. Installed extreme efficient A/C rated for 4 panels. Then added 12 panels more to supply my needs.
32 total. While installing these panels they noticed a damaged panel in the original 30. They researched and found out that the BP panels were recalled. So the
30 were replaced with 20 panels of equal output. BP paid me a portion $8,000 towards the new panels.

I am waiting on a Powerwall….

I know this is super old.  I am trying to switch to RLM.  I have solar and a tesla.  they are saying the RLM does not work with Solar as it is not bi-directional.  Are you still set up this way?

Thanks!

Dan,

see my other post also but yes. I have RLM and Solar. Works exactly as Dan described.
