Most of you have probably heard of the new fee going in to effect 7/1 of $250.

I saw a suggestion (I think on facebook) to do an early registration.  Mine is up at the end of September but I was able to renew it just now for $64.50 (plus the online $2 fee of course).  Because I don't have a renewal notice yet I had to look up my pin but it all went smoothly and now I'm good until 9/2025.  I couldn't find an answer to how early you can renew but saw a couple places where it claimed licenses can be done up to 7 months early so maybe that's the same for the registration.  But I'm happy to save $250 - $2.

Interesting idea. I bought my car in March 2021 so I think I have at least another year to go - I think it's 4 years for new cars. I may try it and see what happens.

Got mine sept 2020 and yes 4 years so I only had a few months left.   But it worked.   They took my money and sent me a paper registration pdf.  Their acknowledgement email has
    • Your MVC printed card will arrive in the mail within 7 to 14 days.

Yes, you might be too far out but I think worth a try.  $250 was worth it to me.

It’s too early for me too, they wouldn’t let me renew my March 2025 reg.  My other one runs until July 2027.  I read somewhere that drivers licenses in NJ are 3 months but couldn’t find anything on registrations.

guess i was the lucky one.  I guess if I do get a separate bill, I'm only out $2 for the online service fee.

Indeed Bill, I’ll let the group know eventually how it works out for myself.

I’m also going to pay the $73.50 online as usual yearly and see what happens.

Cheers

So you're not going early?
Why 73?  Mine was only 64.50

How do you register early without a formal renewal notice?

You can lookup your code with license plate and driver license #’s.

I have the renewal form on my desk and i will renew online this month before July 1st to hopefully avoid the $250 additional EV fee. See if it works anyway otherwise I just need to renew by the end of July.

My MS has always been $73.50 yearly for years.  Not sure why or how others are different.  Sounds like NJ though lol

did a search and came up with this -

https://www.nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/regfees.htm

I guess I'm showing my age -

The fees for senior citizens 65 and older and person(s) with a disability are $7.00 less than those stated in all PASSENGER vehicle categories if you own or lease the vehicle.

do you renew online?  That would account for it.  Turns out I'm showing my age.

Haha Bill not at all my guy. Age is just a state of mind. Yup you nailed it and thanks for the info.

My yearly registration is $71.50 for another 15 years god willing anyway.

Nice collaboration here buddy

My registration is good through November 2024. They won't let me renew online. Says:
  • The registration for this PIN is up to date. You do not need to renew at this time.

Thanks for the info, though. Worth a shot.

I got that for two but, one went through and I renewed through 09/2025 so, that's a bonus, thanks for posting!
