If I am not mistaken, if you sell your car, you have to pay taxes on the sale. If you trade it in, you don't have to pay taxes on the discount on the new car. So you can save a bit by trading it in but it may not be as much as selling it retail AND paying taxes on that sale.

What Mako probably means is that if you sell  your car and buy a new one, you will pay sales tax on the full price rather than the full prices less the trade-in amount.
