Subject: Help Needed: Start-up and early stage company jobs workshop

Dear Albert,

Roger Krakoff is an ELP Advisory Board member and Managing Partner of a VC firm called Cloud Capital Partners. He offered to participate in a panel about jobs in start up and early stage companies.  With the help of Robin Kahan in the Career Center, we have tentatively set 12/6 at 5:00 in Dowling as the time and venue for the event.  The room could be set up to accommodate 100 students.

Roger suggested the following topics:

"- understanding how a start-up works?
- identifying start-ups
- assessing fit
- appreciating the risks and opportunities
- why a start-up is good for you?
- going Big (Company) vs. small -- the tradeoffs
- what does a VC have to do with this all
- thinking about the equity driven culture
- have fun, take a risk, change the world"

Do you think 2 or 3 Tufts Entrepreneurs Society members would be willing to work with me to plan and run this workshop?  I would need help with finalizing the agenda, briefing the panelists in advance, promoting the event, and moderating the panel.

I would also like your advice about whether Joe Chung of Redstar Ventures would be a good candidate to be one of the VC panelists. Roger will be the other VC panelist and he will invite an entrepreneur.  I am considering the following entrepreneurs as the potential 4th panelist: Chris Pape of Genuine Interactive, Robin Liss of Reviewed.com, Jay Habegger of OwnerIQ, Kevin Walker of Simple Tuition, or Jim Lucchese of The Echo Nest. Do you have others you would suggest?

I would also like to arrange a telephone call to speak with your about ELS 107.  Please let me know a good time and number to call.

Thanks for your help.

Dear Roger,

Great, let's tentatively plan on 12/6 at 5:00 PM for the workshop.   I will work on lining up another VC and an entrepreneur.  It would be helpful if you could recruit one entrepreneur.

My perception is that Steve Ricci and Lou Volpe are less active than others at this point. I am thinking that Jeff Bussgang of Flybridge, James Geshwiler of Common Angels, Christopher Mirabile of Launchpad Ventures, or Joe Chung of Redstar Ventures, might be candidates from the investor community.

C might be entrepreneur candidates.

Please feel free to suggest others, especially among the cloud community.

Thanks,

John

12/6 is good.

might suggest Steve Ricci or Lou Volpe as the second VC.   are there others you feel would work?   Also I can add to your list of entprenuers but are there ones who you might like to invite.  please let me know.  we can work on the agenda once we get a list of names.

Dear Roger,

I found the source of the problem. I had made a typo in your Cloud Capital address.

Please let me know your thoughts about the proposed workshop and whether 11/19 or 12/6 in the late afternoon or early evening would work for you.  I am also willing to assist you in lining up some other panelists.

Best regards,

John

Dear Roger,

I sent this note to your Cloud Capital email address, but it was bounced back.

Should I use the gmail address as a routine?

Dear Roger,

In following up on your offer to participate in a workshop regarding jobs in start and early stage companies, I consulted with a few students. The reactions were:

1. All thought such a workshop would very helpful.
2. Some wanted it to include both full time jobs after graduation and internships.
3. Some wanted to hear from entrepreneurs about why they started a new venture and what they learned.
3. Thursday evenings at 5 , 6 or 7 for 90 minutes would work best to attract the largest number of students.

My inclination would be to focus on ELS students, rather than open the session to the wider Tufts community.   I estimate there are about 170 Seniors who have taken, or are taking, ELS courses. From this pool we might draw 30%, or 51 students.  If we open the session up to sophomores and juniors who have taken, or are taking, ELS courses and are interested in internships, I estimate there might be an additional 100 potential attendees.

My inclination would be to focus on the seniors and help them develop strategies to find full time jobs after graduation.  These are the students who will need the near term help in finding jobs.  In addition, they will be available for longer commitments than interns.

I think it would be good to have a panel of 2 VCs and 2 CEOs of start up or early stage companies.
You could breakdown the topics you suggested and assign each panelist to speak about a couple of points and leave a lot of time for Q & A.

The Career Center will help with the logistics for this event.  Robin Kahan has inquired about 11/29 or 12/6 as dates to hold the session in Dowling Hall on the Upper Campus and it is available on these dates. The room could hold up to 100 people.

Please let me know what you think about the focus of the workshop and the dates that are available.  In addition, please let me know who else we should invited to be on the panel.

Best regards,

John
