Unless you are obsessive with round biscuits, why not pat dough into a square and cut square biscuits? I find re-rolled dough never bakes as good as non re-rolled dough.
Thanks for a great recipe.
Yumm! Do I need to see more? Made them to have with boughten fried chicken. Not sure why I ever ordered the dry biscuits from this place, these were so much better. Easy to make and turned out delicious.
First time trying biscuits and so glad I chose your recipe! Looking no further- these were amazing! Total hit w/ the whole family. We each had 2! I love to cut in half, butter while hot and drizzle with honey or jam. Thanks for all the great extra little tips. It was your tips and detail that made me choose your recipe over the many out there??
This creamy country-style white gravy uses half chicken broth and half whole milk. You can certainly use all milk but I prefer it this way with dinner dishes. It just adds a level of savoriness that I love! Be sure to really season this gravy up well so that it tastes good enough to drink! There is nothing more depressing than a bland gravy!
Thank you for this recipe. This will be another hit in my house. Thank you for all your scrumptious recipes. I made your cinnamon rolls today and girl let me tell you, best everrr. My go to way everytime. Thanks again.
The O.G. of Dallas' fried chicken scene, Babe's Chicken Dinner House is an excellent option for perfectly fried bird. Order up fried chicken on the bone or strips, all paired with a selection of family-style sides included in the price. Just don't fill up on those biscuits before the chicken comes.
The restaurants resemble farmhouses with plenty of farm animals lining the walls as well as various pieces of framed art featuring chickens. The meat is always fresh, never frozen, a phrase many restaurants tout with pride these days, but they have been doing it that way since opening their doors in 1993. The chicken is marinated for 24 hours in a simple salt water mixture and fried to order; the kitchen rarely uses heat lamps.
Have you ever tasted buttermilk? A gravy made from buttermilk would taste pretty terrible. Gravy is made with regular milk. You could however use the left over (from the carton, not the buttermilk the chicken was sitting in) to make some delicious biscuits!
Fantastic! This was such an easy and delicious meal. I have to admit, I was nervous to try it but I am so glad I did.. the chicken was juicy and tender inside and crispy outside. Mashed potatoes and gravy and sautéed zucchini with onions and green chiles, and a biscuit to top it off. My family loved it. I definitely recommend this recipe.
1. In Texas, what is the correct topping for mashed potatoes?
2. In Texas, what is the correct topping for biscuits, besides butter, honey or jam?
3. In Texas, what is the correct topping for chicken fried steak?
4. In Texas, what is the correct topping for any other piece of meat, fish or sausage and/or any other vegetable?
5. What did my great-grandmother Blanche feed her dog, Rover?
These biscuits are so good and easy to make. They get requested so much. My friends love them. The hardest thing is deciding what to put on them. Easy and delicious!! I make them at least once a week. Checking out your website for other recipes after this recipe is one of my favorites.
Hi Caroline, yes, once baking soda has been activated, it begins to leaven as soon as it touches liquid/acid (I talk about that in this article) so if you wait too long before baking, you may notice a decrease in leavening effect. Definitely no refrigerating overnight with this specific recipe; however, I did not notice a change in freezing the biscuits, so no problems with rise or texture. It definitely makes planning meals ahead much easier!
Hi Tessa, I made these biscuits this morning and they were yummy. Last night I measured and stirred the dry ingredients in a bowl. Then I cut the butter into small cubes and added it to the bowl. I covered it with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge overnight. This morning I preheated my oven, cut the butter into the dry ingredients, added not quite all of the buttermilk and proceeded as the recipe stated. So easy and they turned out great! I made them square. Next time, and there definitely will be a next time, I will do the same thing but I will also cut the butter into the dry. Saves so much time then in the morning add buttermilk and proceed with the folding and baking. Thanks so much for this recipe, it will be my go to for biscuits!!
Made these biscuits, they are amazing! I only got 6 from the recipe because I rolled them 1 inch thick. Definitely be making these again, they are great later on with a little butter and toasting under broiler. My husband commented on them every time I served them!
Made these this morning instead of my normal half butter half shortening recipe-you win hands down! Crisp top and bottom-thanks so much for another great recipe. Jim Smith Summerfield NC (75year old NC man so you know I know something about how biscuits should taste)
Welcome to life at my table. Let me help you with dinner tonight or just take a minute and be inspired! I'm Kristin Andrus, a busy mom of four little girls and a bustling household. I thought I would never be able to make delicious biscuits for my family. I do savory cooking, not baking, but I came upon this recipe and made them and now my family says, NO MORE GRAND BISCUITS. Thank you for sharing this gem of a recipe.
I love your recipe. I made these for my family and they were gone in minutes. I didnt have any oregano so i used my favorite herb dill and they were delish. I also put a teaspoon of minced garlic in with the biscuits.
ohhhh noooo! So sorry they came out that way for you. Yeah, the original recipe is already plenty salty (I'm a salt lover) so more than that wouldn't be so good.
Maybe you could make something like chicken pot pie filling (or a thick soup/stew), and bake it by itself, but serve it with the biscuits crumbled on top.. that way you could let the saltiness distribute through the filling/soup flavor because you'd be eating spoonsful of soup+ a little bit of biscuit in each bite.
These look freaking delicious! Thank you so much for sharing, no longer do I have to go to Red Lobster when I crave these biscuits. I could probably make 12 batches for what a dinner at Red Lobster would cost!
I stumbled on this a few days ago, and shared the recipe with my ex later that night because i knew how much he liked the Red Lobster biscuits. He made them immediately and said they were fantastic, but to use less oregano.
Texas is the home of chicken fried steak and the dish is a fundamental recipe for those with Texan roots. Texas even boasts a state holiday, passed in October 2011 designating October 26, as Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day.
This recipe looks awesome! Our neighbors were kind enough to let us use their dumpster for a few of our things so I wanted to try making them a big dinner to say thank you! This recipe seems very doable, thank you for sharing!
This was the single most tasteless chicken fried steak I've ever eaten in my entire life, and I am a 53 year old retired trucker. So, you know I've eaten more than my fair share of southern chicken fried steak. I really wanted to like your recipe but it was horrendous. I should realized there was a flaw in the recipe when I saw the ratio of flour to season salt.
This is too good! I marvel at how you always come up with these recipes ? The wonderful thing is that my mum loves scallion scones and dad, lapcheong (we have 5 packets stowed away somewhere in the house). Happy new year!
Seriously, you have the most creative recipes. I love coming here!! AND your writing is KILLER. AND your weekend sounds perfect. Like give me some days full of Nexflix please, that sounds awesome and you have me convinced that is how I need to spend my weekend. Doing it, but only after I make some biscuits and gravy! ?
Oh goodness! This recipe has stepped up my biscuit game. My Quarantine version had crispy bacon (no pancetta on hand) and I used some black pepper cheddar I had left over instead of the gruyere. I even sprinkled some cheese on top before baking! No buttermilk in the fridge so I used half Greek yogurt/half whole milk substitution. Served the hubs breakfast with these open face and a couple of fried eggs. He told me, "Home run, Babe!"
Made the recipe tonight, it was delicious. I added a bag of the daring brand original vegan chicken pieces at the same time as the frozen veggies, and topped with puff pastry. I filled 4 12oz ramekins with the amount made. I also added garlic powder parsley thyme and rosemary, yum!
This recipe was a huge hit for my family! Instead of the brand of biscuits the recipe suggests, I used just the store brand of my local grocery store. The biscuits were so soft and buttery and paired very well with the creamy vegetable mixture. We will definitely be having this again!
I doubled the recipe except for the biscuits for a bigger ratio of filling and I used the same saucepan to cook and bake for fewer dishes to wash. I added chickpeas, subbed mushrooms for the corn, and used all fresh veggies. I would have lightly sautéed or steamed first or simmered longer before topping and baking, as the carrots and green beans were al dente when done but still very good. I also added a bit of fennel seed and fresh parsley to the mix and would increase the proportion of these next time!
Brilliant idea, biscuits are not really served here in NZ, we call them scones, and have them with jam & cream, but I tried them with sausage gravy on a trip to the US a few years ago, (thanks goodness it was a short holiday or I would have left the size of a house!) and fell in love:) Makes a fab change from rice, I guess you could use buttermilk instead of sour cream?
