MathWorks today introduced Release 2016b (R2016b) with new capabilities that simplify working with big data in MATLAB. Engineers and scientists can now more easily work with data too big to fit in memory. R2016b also includes additional features in Simulink; a new product, Risk Management Toolbox; and updates and bug fixes to 83 other products.

Tall arrays now provide a way to work naturally with out-of-memory data using familiar MATLAB functions and syntax, removing the need to learn big data programming. Engineers and scientists can use tall arrays with hundreds of math, statistics, and machine learning algorithms. Code can run on Hadoop clusters or be integrated directly into Spark applications.

I am using Matlab 2016b without issues for many years now. It also worked fine when I upgraded from my 2015 MacBook Pro (intel) to my 2023 MacBook Pro with M2 Max architecture and OS X Ventura. After upgrading to Sonoma, Matlab does not start up anymore. As it worked on my M2 Max with Ventura before, I guess it must be a Sonoma-specific problem and not related to the hardware.

When it comes to MATLAB and major OS updates, compatibility can sometimes become a hurdle. It's worth checking with MathWorks, the developer of MATLAB, to verify if MATLAB 2016b is officially compatible with macOS Sonoma. There may be specific patches or workarounds suggested by MathWorks for running older MATLAB versions on the latest macOS.

The error "Sorry! We could not determine the machine architecture for your host..." can often be indicative of MATLAB struggling to identify the system's architecture. Given the transition from Intel-based Macs to Apple Silicon, this could indeed be a key source of the problem. You might want to check whether there are any updates or patches from MathWorks addressing compatibility with Apple Silicon architecture.

The warning about being unable to locate the Java Runtime Environment could also be a significant factor in MATLAB's inability to start. It's important to ensure that the correct version of Java is available and properly configured on your system for MATLAB to function effectively.

If you haven't already, you could attempt a more thorough reinstallation of MATLAB. This could involve not only reinstalling the software but also conducting a cleanup of any residual files or configurations from the previous installation. Sometimes, lingering configurations can impact a fresh installation's ability to function optimally.

Review whether there are any MATLAB updates, hotfixes, or patches specifically addressing macOS Sonoma compatibility. Sometimes, software providers release updates after major OS updates to address compatibility issues.

In the interim, when launching MATLAB, you might want to try running it under Rosetta 2, which allows Intel-based applications to run on Apple Silicon-based Macs. This is not a permanent solution, of course, but it might serve as a temporary workaround until a more permanent fix is available.

If the issue persists despite these efforts, reaching out to MathWorks' support team directly could provide valuable insights and potential solutions tailored to your environment. They are well positioned to suggest specific troubleshooting steps or if any workarounds are available for your specific configuration.

Thank you for your supply! Unfortunately there is no support from mathworks anymore for version 2016b. That is why I am asking here because I was hoping that others might have been facing the same problem an might have found a solution. I also postet my request in the mathworks community...

Could you please explain the last parts in detail. I did not understand how did you comment them out, and comment out what? I spent some time to solve the same problem, I am using Arduino 1.8.5 and MatlabR2017a, but still, the same problem existed. I will be appreciated if you may help me. The error is like below;

Uninstall the IDE then remove this folder, matlab changes the configuration of the IDE somewhere in this folder so it starts reading the boards from somewhere else,, after deleting the folder Arduino or arduino15 or both you can reinstall the arduino IDE and reconfigure the esp boards from boards manager after adding the jason extension from preferences as before and it will work

So I'm trying to perform a compile of this and I'm getting errors. I've attached the diagnostic viewer log text. When I run the compile using the built-in grt.tlc (generic real-time target) I don't get any errors.

In addition...
you try select other veristand compiler ex. NIVeriStand_Linux_64.tlc...
(It's easy install more then NIVeriStand.tlc)
If that's success.....your veristand and matlab connect should be no problem...

Matlab 2016b is the default version on Acropolis. Additional versions of Matlab can be loaded with the module command. Matlab 2016b is configured to work with the Distributed Computing Server. Matlab DCS is integrated with the job scheduler. This allows you to seamlessly distribute your work across the compute nodes with out the need of a job submit script.

You may submit Matlab batch jobs to the compute nodes using a submit script. You may use the Parallel Computing Toolbox to start smaller parallel jobs confined to a single node. Matlab PCT jobs do not count against the Matlab DCS licenses. Example submit scripts may be found on Acropolis in the /share/qsub_examples/matlab directory.

By default Matlab is configured to open a pool of up to 12 workers using the PCT and the local profile. You may adjust the NumWorkers option to set this higher. Each compute node has 56 workers. You may submit a batch job requesting the full 56 cores on a node and then open a parpool of 56 workers. However your work is more likely to queue. This would require that a node be completely idle in order to fulfill this request. Please do not run parallel Matlab jobs on the Acropolis head node with the PCT

Requires MATLAB 2016b or later.
Use this code to provide a framework for your own big data analysis.
Contains all MATLAB files needed to replicate the demos featured in the fast-paced "Using Tall Arrays with Big Data" video [ -tall-arrays-in-action-122883.html ], which is highly recommended for you to watch and obtain context:
1. Pickups demo [.mlx - MATLAB live script] - requires Mapping Toolbox and Distributed Computing Toolbox
2. Averages demo [.mlx - MATLAB live script] - requires Statistics Toolbox and Distributed Computing Toolbox
3. wms.mat [needed for Pickups demo]
4. load_settings.m [needed for Pickups demo]
This zip file does NOT contain datasets. Datasets can be downloaded at _record_data.shtml. Only one dataset is needed to run the scripts.
This zip file DOES contain the following additional files, which are generated from running the Pickups demo on ALL 2015 Yellow cab datasets:
5. .gif of all 2015 pickups by hour ("raw" version)
6. .gif of all 2015 pickups by hour ("cleaned" version)
7. .fig of all 2015 pickups summarized in a 2D histogram. This can be opened (and manipulated) in MATLAB.

Helo Alexandre,
I have similar problem and I was unable to find any further responses to this topic. It happens in only one subject, other subjects I processed before or after went without error. I am running openMEEG version 2.4 on Brainstorm with current update (February 2019), Matlab R2016b, Win 7 64-bit.

It is weird that this only happens with a single subject, which will suggest that is unrelated to the original issue. But I agree that the error message might not help. It seems like it just hangs and never comes back.

The bug you get is not coming from OpenMEEG, but from Brainstorm. In the files you sent, we can see that the leadfield was correctly computed (openmeeg_gain_seeg.mat), but it looks like its size does not match what Brainstorm expects at line 492 in bst_openmeeg.

The leadfield matrix computed by openmeeg has 114 rows, but I can't check how many were expected based only on the OpenMEEG files you sent.
If you are comfortable with the Matlab environment, you could try understanding where is the error coming from by placing a breakpoint in bst_openmeeg at line 492 (click at the left of the line), then starting the BEM computation. When the debugger stops, you can explore the contents of the variables.

Otherwise, you could try sending me the files and I could do it for you. Right-click on the subject > file > duplicate subject, then delete all files that are not necessary to run this computation. Then right-click on the subject > File > Export subject, upload the .zip file somewhere, and send me the link as a private message.
