sunday, oct. 26 was the last of my carbon-negative backyard biochar
workshops for the fall. this one was at pony farm north of temple
NH. over a dozen folks came to learn about carbon-negative strategy
and how to make small bactches of biochar at home. doug clayton of
jaffrey NH supplied us with a new pair of barrels fabricated into a
gunther-style 2-barrel retort. we ran a test burn on frifday before
the workshop, and made two more batches at the sunday workshop.

i uploaded a series of 9 photos to the google terra preta website that
doug and i took of the first test burn on friday:
http://groups.google.com/group/terra-preta/files

i wish i had taken a few photos detailing the various results of each
burn. most material was thoroughly charred, and was easily crushed
with a stick of firewood. because the outer barrel was not quite a 50-
gallon drum, with a 35-gallon the inner barrel, the space between the
barrel was too tight, and we had to add extra firewood to keep fire
burning in the outer barrel.

hi folke,

yes, we have taught many people around northern new england how to make your
"simplest" 2-barrel retort to make small batches of biochar. i am confident
quite a few folks wil make biochar to spread on soil in the spring, so next
summer we should have a lot of terta preta nova tales to tell.

thanks for devising and sharing this elegantly simple technique. it allows
people to experience the power of gasification and imagine how we can
capture and use all that energy released.
