beginning next weekend, and most weekends until thanksgiving,
somewhere in the northeast a workshop will be held on carbon-negative
biochar/biofuel strategy to confront climate change, reverse global
warming, sequester carbon, produce renewable biofuels, enhance energy
independence and distributed production, increase soil fertility,
reduce use of synthetic farm chemicals, and grow nutrient dense
foods.
these half day and full day sessions teach the broad overview of
carbon-negative climate strategy, and how to make do-it-yourself
batches of biochar at home with minimal, cheap equipment and simple,
safe, reliable methods.
workshop leaders include david yarrow (albany NY), doug clayton
(jaffrey NH), jono neiger (leverett MA), and dan kittredge (petersham
MA).

people are encouraged to bring a 5-gallon bucket with a sample of
typical biomass they can harvest from their land to turn into
biochar. participants can also bring their own buckets and barrels to
fabricate into a backyard biochar burner.
the immediate goal of these workshops is to encourage folks to make
biochar from an assortment of feedstocks through the fall and early
winter, and to incorporate this homemade biochar in simple experiments
with soils, potting mixes and compost in the spring. thus, next year
a wide diversity of field experiments will be underway around the
northeast, hopefully on a variety of soils, crops and farming systems.
during the winter, we will try to assure that carbon-negative biochar
workshops are taught at farming and landscaping conferences. contact
us if you can help make these events happen.
these fall and winter education sessions will culminate in early march
with a northeast biochar network roundtable for leaders and key
resource people to assemble for a day of deliberation, strategy,
organization, goal setting, and policy drafting. see:

one long-term goal of this northeast biochar initiative is to enroll
farmers to become trained and certified to produce and market foods
labeled "carbon-negative" and "nutrient dense." see:
