The Agnes Sweater Vest is a fun and easy crochet project that is great for using up leftover yarn. This tutorial goes through every step of making this granny square sweater including tools and yard used, and tips for adjusting the sweater design to fit your desired measurements. I hope that reading through my notes will inspire you and help give you a starting point to make your own!
These are the supplies that I used to make my Agnes Sweater Vest but feel free to use whatever you have on hand. You may want to experiment with a different yarn weight, needle size or bigger or smaller granny squares to make it your own.
In total, I made 25 granny squares and laid them out like the picture below. The back has one more row than the front and I have only one square to connect at the sides. If you want more ease on the sides, you can add another square, or even connect the sides with crochet rows.
I machine quilted the granny squares quilt with my tried and true zig zag. I should really branch out more on quilting designs ? The zig zag stitch is done using my walking foot. I use this one for my Janome machine.
The idea of the cartoon Granny began with the Little Red Riding Hood character in spoofs of the story, first appearing as such in the 1937 animated short Little Red Walking Hood which featured Egghead, directed by Tex Avery.[5] Subsequent appearances of a similar "granny" character included The Cagey Canary (1941), directed by Bob Clampett; Hiss and Make Up (1943), directed by Friz Freleng; and Hare Force (1944), featuring Bugs Bunny and Sylvester the dog (a one-off character distinct from the later Sylvester the cat). Finally, the character was solidified into her current role in Canary Row in 1950, with Bea Benaderet providing her voice. June Foray, who had been providing Granny's voice for her appearances on Capitol Records since 1950,[6] took over the role officially in 1955, and would perform the role for most of the rest of the character's theatrical run. Granny would continue to appear in several more animated shorts from the 1950s on, as a foil for Sylvester, who was always attempting to eat her pet bird Tweety.
This ranking of granny sh*ts apples is too generous. For years my parents tortured me- mind, body, and soul- with these abominations in my lunch box. Every day I faced a choice between starvation and plaguing my stomach. Some days I was able to resist, others I succumbed. The bitter horrors I experienced still wake me up at night.

Of course I would love to make an afghan with this square pattern, but I need more time and patience to take on that type of project right now ? If you are interested in making a blanket with these squares and want to alternate between the owl granny square and a basic granny square, you can follow a basic granny square pattern like THIS ONE and your squares will be the same size.

Just wanted to share the project I made with mine, though since I worked from the original guest post I hadn't spotted your suggested matching plain granny squares, so invented my own which didn't quite perfectly match in size. Still quite pleased with the results:

Hi! Great pattern! It's so fun and different. I'm a new crocheter and I'm not the best at reading patterns. I suggest to anybody else new at crocheting who may be attempting this pattern to have the regular Granny Square mastered first. I tried to make the owl square before I learned the granny square and it kept coming out round. After I made the granny square and figured out how to math-it-out the owl square became square in my next attempt.

Does Anyone happen to have a picture that they could post of the back of a finished owl granny square? I'm just wanting to see if the stitching to the embellishments is supposed to be visible or hidden. Thanks!
Hello, I would like to say "Thank you" for sharing your gorgeous owl pattern. This is exactly what I am looking for. It has been many years since I've crocheted an am Looking forward to being creative once again. My husband passed away just ten months ago, being along in a town we had recently retired to. I decided I surely needed to once again start a hobby I had truly loved. I have no doubt it will take a bit to recall all the stories. I have an adult daughter that loves owls an is crazy about them. I know when I finish and send this beautiful patterned owl in a large throw (that's what I'm hoping to make her) she will be over the moon.
Not crocheting in such a long time I am at a loss for how much yarn I should order. I do plan to create the throw output purples as purple is her favorite color. I plan to use the owl squares and the granny squares as I'm wanting to make this quite large. My problem, I'm at a loss for how much yarn I will need along with what purples. I am hoping you can help me with just what I will need. As I wrote I will be ordering on line. being handicapped I can't get to the stores myself. My wonderful husband who was a retired Veteran did my shopping. I'm sorry for such a long post but I honestly didn't know of anyone I could ask for advice with this. I have bookmarked this page so I can find the instructions again an would be extremely grateful for any reply's with some helpful advise. I also haven't purchased yarn in forever, or as it seems. O:) any advice as to the name brand of a yarn that is good quality but isn't all that costly would be nice to know.

What happens when you take a traditional granny stripe pattern and switch up the colors? Like one of those magic eye posters from the 90s, I squinted a bit, and saw triangles where there were stripes. The end result is this Love Triangles Granny Stripe Baby Blanket that was gifted recently to a friend and her soon to be baby boy.
On the first granny row, work granny stitches (3 dc clusters) into every 3rd stitch. The one thing here to note is that while you skip stitches, you do not work any chains in between the 3 dc clusters. I wanted to minimize the size of the holes left in the granny stripe, so I went from one dc cluster to right into the next. For all subsequent rows, work dc clusters back to back, each into the space created from the clusters in the previous row.
Make a Magic Circle or sliding ring or use your favorite method of starting granny squares, pull up a loop and ch3 (counts as first dc here and everywhere). 2dc in circle, ch3.
3dc, ch3 3 times
Slpst to the top chain of the beginning ch3, Do not end off.

I debated on calling it a half log cabin, but lots of crochet is called mitered so I went with that : ) Been itching to make a sampler type of granny blanket, that will take some planning, with kinds of granny stitch squares needed for it (and finish my other blankets!).

Here in coastal Central California apples can remain on the tree well into February. Our nights get quite cool, mid 30's to mid 40's, but we rarely experience freezing temperatures. Daytimes are usually in the 50's to low 60's. In that climate, Granny Smiths go from being green to turning completely yellow and looking almost like Golden Delicious. What is more significant is how the fruit tastes. The acidity definitely mellows significantly, and it then takes on an amazing balanced flavor. I can't imagine anyone ever selecting such an apple and promoting it unless they got to taste it in this form, because when it's fully ripe, it's simply one of the best, crunchiest, most balanced table apple I've eaten.
We have several apples growing in this area that are very late ripening, e.g. January and February. Lady Williams, Pink Lady, Hoover, Hauer pippin and Granny Smith all come to mind. These are all essentially inedible in November, and don't become tasty until January, Some will also mellow on the tree, but the BRIX goes way up if left on the tree. Of course, in our climate, some apple trees retain their leaves all the way into January. I have one tree called 'Sweet Valentine' named for the fact that the fruit ripens on valentine's day. It was discovered locally as a rootstock seedling shoot in an abandoned orchard.
It is said that the best apples are the ones that ripen when the leaves begin to turn and fall off. The theory has it that the nutrients that went to the leaves go to to the apples. I've tasted Fujis left on the tree, and they develop an incredibly sweet water core, almost like eating pure honey - too sweet for my taste, but it is a fun experience.
For us, since our apples grow into January, it makes the late apples the best quality apples we can grow. Unfortunately, no one in commercial apple growing cares, because the entire fruit growing industry is bent on only one thing: getting the first fruit to market to get the highest possible price. The end result is that a lot of these amazing late varieties are simply forgotten, or they don't let them ripen properly, as is the case with the granny smith.
