The barcode scanner control is retired as it is replaced by the barcode reader control. While the legacy barcode scanner's existing functionality will continue to be supported in future versions of Power Apps, the barcode reader includes the latest improvements and should be used where possible.

Use Android Phone as Barcode Scanner for Windows PC

The control opens a native scanner on an Android, iOS, and Windows device. The scanner automatically detects a barcode, a QR code, or a data-matrix code when in view. The control doesn't support scanning in a web browser.

The barcode scanner is a button that doesn't display the scan result. Consider showing the scan result with a Label control. Set the label's Text property to the barcode scanner's Value property. Set the label's Live property to Polite so that screen-reader users are notified of changes. This change makes the scanned value accessible to everyone, irrespective of visual ability.

Is barcode scanning available for the Perspective Workstation app installed on a Windows 11 Surface tablet? The tablet itself has a native barcode scanner (within its camera app) but I am unable to get it to work. My demo app works for IOS.

Trying to build utilities for warehousing / shipping/ photography on the Microsoft Tech Stack and i repeatedly run into errors on the Windows 10 platform with Power App - the barcode scanner is the latest.

I have a quite specific use case scenario. Client of mine is currently working on quite old Motorola MC9190 mobile devices with Windows CE Mobile 6.5 as main OS. There is a Motorola software called AppCenter which let's You block almost every part of UI and software. This helped me setup each device to startup only with Wifi, barcode scanner and preconfigured RDP connection enabled. As those devices are getting more expensive to repair and their availability is getting lower, it's time to slowly move to some new and up to date hardware which is (unfortunately) Android based device.

The barcode scanner control increases warehouse users' productivity as they can scan barcodes using the device camera or even the dedicated barcode scanner. This feature also opens scenarios for partners to create more advanced experiences using a barcode scanner.

The mobile client renders a user-friendly control on page fields for starting the barcode scanner. To enable the barcode scanning action on a field, the ExtendedDatatype property in AL code must be set to Barcode. Pages with such fields, which are only supported for text and code data types, will automatically display a barcode scanning button in the UI, enabling scanning via the device camera. This scanning is highly efficient and responsive, featuring mobile OS level processing and supporting the most well-known 1D and 2D barcode formats. Once a barcode is scanned, its value is entered in the field on the page, and the focus moves to the next quick-entry field on the page. This feature is supported on both iOS and Android platforms.

Zoom: Works just like the zoom feature of a camera. The default zoom is at 50, you can increase it to 70 or more to allow holding your phone to within the desired distance from the barcode (to accommodate tight spaces, etc)
Brightness: helps add more light into the picture if you need to scan in dark conditions
Camera: Set to the specific value of your device (1,2, 3) that selects the front or the back camera.

The barcode control is available under Insert>Media. Once added there is a key step in a successful application/
The scanner is feeding the live image from the camera stream and it is key to size the barcode control to the optimal value for your targeted devices.
As general guidance, a size going below the half of the screen height is likely to provide a too low of an image quality for good barcode detection. Also using a full screen experience can be very costly on the memory consumption, particularly on iOs devices.
Based on my testing, the maximum size iOs can support successfully is at 640700. In current example the scanner is sized at 640x 501, at the smallest size I could set to get successful scans with my devise (this really depends on the resolution of your camera).

1.The app needs to lock down a certain barcode type or expose to the user the option to choose the type before scanning.
2.On mobile players (Android, iOs) the camera preview has a locked ratio (does not stretch to full width available).
3.Long barcodes (15+ characters like I2O5) with low quality labels can give trimmed/erroneous scan values while scanning from a different distance/light conditions, etc.
4.The barcode control needs to have a height of 500x 700 or higher. Further on, iOS has lower success rates than Android devices due to memory limitations. Please set the scanner width and height to 640700 or lower and scan rate of 30 to avoid such errors.
5.Scan rate needs to be set at 35 rather than 60 (the default) to ensure an optimal memory utilization.
6.When running the app long time/ locking unlocking the scanner can freeze sporadically, need to restart the app to recover.

Windows Embedded: Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5, aka WEH6.5, WEH6.5.x, WEH 6.5.3 is the successor to Windows Mobile 6.5. Originally released on the ES400 and MC65, then soon adapted to the MC75A, MC9190-G, MC55A, and an option available to the MC92N0-G and MC67. The newest breed of Windows Mobile includes many refinements such as more robust Web Browser, newer security encryptions over remote desktop, further Wifi firmware enhancements - all while bringing you VoIP funcitonality (on select models), email, messaging, netCF for custom app development, while incorporating the best and most reliable built-in barcode scanner technology available on the market.

Android: Android devices with built in barcode scanners are a phenomonon. Say goodbye to the junky aftermarket attachments (you know what we're talking about) that many struggle to use with their phones or tablets because of their heavily under-developed firmware and cheap-as-possible hardware. With the release of top-quality, more affordable models MC40, you can easily access your cloud inventory system via WiFi through web browser, with the performance of built-in, industrial barcode scanning from the inventor (Symbol Technologies) of the bar code reader. Develop your own Apps, and because these are engineered for business, there's no playstore for user mis-behavior. If you need to scan barcodes on Android for the extreme environments, the MC9200 with Android is a must see. Need field scanning and mobility? See the MC67 with Android.

Scan-IT to Office provides an elegant alternative to conventional barcode scanners and dedicated mobile data collection equipment. Besides remote barcode scanning, it supports custom data acquisition forms using any combination of input fields: Use multiple barcode scanner fields, manual inputs (with text recognition support), images, lists etc. to cover requirements like stocktaking, check-in / check-out tasks, attendee tracking, picking, material management, field service tasks and many more.

I just had a thought. I have tablets at my warehouse paired with Motorolla barcode scanners. The tablets see them as keyboards. Is it possible that their presence may disable on-screen keyboards? I mean, if the computer sees that a "keyboard" is attached, the on-screen keyboard wouldn't come up, am I correct? Is there a way I can make the on-screen keyboard appear even with the bluetooth device paired?

Yes, if the scanner connects as a HID, by default the soft keypad will disappear. Depending on the model, you might have to scan a barcode to have the soft keypad come back up. Some Bluetooth barcode scanners can do mixed mode entry... you press the bottom side button to bring up the soft keypad and press it again to make it disappear.
