What's the easiest way to accomplish this fundamental task? If possible I'd love something like 7Zip that I can just right Click, and extract and have the program worry about how to do it regardless if it's a .zip, a .rar or a .foo compressed file.

Another free alternative is the unrar-free package. However, unrar-free is only able to extract RAR files, unlike bsdtar and unar which are able to extract many file formats. Furthermore, starting in Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish), unrar-free is just a wrapper around libarchive (just like bsdtar), which makes unrar-free redundant.

This question does not appear to be about a specific programming problem, a software algorithm, or software tools primarily used by programmers. If you believe the question would be on-topic on another Stack Exchange site, you can leave a comment to explain where the question may be able to be answered.

I have the task: I have the Windows-made rar-archive (folders, files in it and so on), that via FTP was copied to Linux server.I want to unrar this archive to keep the file structure as it was in Windows - with folder.

We offer a free service that allows you to open any .rar file without the need to install additional archiving software on your computer or smartphone. If you just work with RAR compressed data from time to time, the last thing you want is buying another software package you barely use.

What our service is doing is to get your .rar file converted to zip for you. Like that, you can quickly open it by the default application offered by Windows or Mac OS. It is that simple, and you can use it as many times as you want.

What makes Unrar Online a great tool is that the entire process is fast and very convenient. There are no software downloads, and everything happens online just with few clicks. But be careful: Our tool is easy to use that its addictive!

When using unrar.online, it submits your data on a remote server for temporary processing. We remove all your files from our cloud shortly after the conversion. We will not use it otherwise or look at it.

If you want to extract your RAR file locally, there are several free tools available for Windows, Linux, and Mac. Some popular options include 7-Zip, PeaZip, The Unarchiver, B1 Free Archiver, and Bandizip. These utilities support RAR files and various other archive formats, making them versatile and convenient for handling compressed files across different platforms. Choose the one that best fits your needs and platform, and enjoy hassle-free file extraction.

You can use Chrooted Debian and install anything inside (Include unrar-free / p7zip-full and other debian apps).
Something can be extracted with default archiver: tar xvf archive.gz
Unzip also available in system. Rar? Do not use this propriaritary and old format. lzma (7zip) and xz - better

@Dachaz Did you find a solution to this problem? I have been trying to figure this out for a week now and it is driving me crazy. Who would have known that something as simple as .rar files would not be supported by the WD Mirror gen 2?

A thing to keep in mind: the unpacking script will not be available in other folders on your device (i.e. you always need to ssh to the same folder where you downloaded the script), but you can unpack files anywhere on your device. This means that if you wanted to unpack /shares/Games/TotallyLegalGame.rar you would

I have several RAR archives spread around multiple directories but all under a particular root folder on my Debian based NAS.Could someone help me write a simple script that would recursively go into each folder, unrar the contents, go back to the parent folder and move onto the next directory? So:

That removed the package unrar magnaged by pacman why do you think that would remove /usr/local/bin/unrar that you manually installed without the use of pacman?
Edit:
Tips_and_tricks#Identify_files_not_owned_by_any_package

I do not think so and thats not the issue I reported.
Whether I use the package from pacman or not - the fact is that system cannot see the files ('No such file or directory'). So the question is : how do I solve it?

That did it! I installed unrar from the slacky.eu repository in /boot/config/scripts/bin and it works fine. I suspect I had a non-slackware compatible version. Someday I'll figure out how to add this to my go file or $PATH.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
lutris : Depends: unrar but it is not installable
Recommends: python3-evdev but it is not installable
Recommends: libc6-i386 but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: lib32gcc1 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages

Run sudo apt intsall unrar most probably it will show the same error. Its actually because you maybe having other added repositories packages which are having a conflict with the python3-evdev and the other 2 shown. So you need to figure out which repo you added or package that you installed other than from the official repo conflicting with these three packages.

When I used ubuntu i simply use synaptic sudo apt install synaptic and install package in this case unrar from there and then synaptic shows which package is conflicting. Send the synaptic screen shot that will be helpful.

for example deb stretch main change this to deb stretch main contrib non-free and then sudo apt update
you can also do it using software manager or even synaptic
here is the synaptic screenshot.

Usually i recommend to not install debian the way you do instead use the debian non free DVD here it includes non free firmware and repos by default. -free/cd-including-firmware/ but no issues you can enable it by these 3 ways and dont forget to update after enabling repos.

Yes you can set your download client to unrar the file but this creates a problem when using other programs like CouchPotato etc, as the auto unrar will happen for all torrents, even if manually added.
Now if you auto unrar it will always unrar to the download folder not the completed folder and if you set it to a specific folder then all torrents will be unpacked there, which is ok until you have files that do not need to be unpacked and are then stored in the completed folder.
Meaning you cannot point Sonarr to scan in 2 locations, cant we just simplify everything and make Sonarr do the unpacking.

Rutorrent works best by auto moving downloaded torrents to a completed folder usually by a hardlink, then its up to whatever program you use to unrar etc. This also leaves the copy in the download folder free for seeded to your desired settings within your download client.

More practical for now: there are only a few groups who upload rarred torrents to KAT (to name an example). When I still used it I simply blacklisted one or two combinations of words and I never got any rarred torrents anymore.

So especially when there is a directory structure included, use unrar x filename.rar command. To extract to a certain directory unrar x filename.rar /path/to/dir/. Exacting only specific files from the archive and the options are mostly not required for what you want, I guress.

Hello Everyone, I have seen this unrar Error 64 resolved before but the posts are a couple years old. I am having the issue currently in NZBGet with a ReadyNas 102 running current firmware. Wondering if anyone could give me some quick help on this. Hoping not to have to flatten the device and start from scratch if I can avoid it. Appreciate anyone's help.

At Sonar, we are studying real-world vulnerabilities to improve our code analyzers, and to help the open-source community to secure their projects. To uncover and understand complex vulnerabilities in high-profile applications, our researchers need to take the perspective of real-world attackers. By sharing our findings from this perspective, we also aim to provide useful insights and learnings to the community.

Zimbra is an enterprise-ready email solution used by over 200,000 businesses, government and financial institutions. Zimbra instances recently became a target of a 0-day attack campaign, likely conducted by a state actor who targeted European government and media instances.

The fact that a 0-day vulnerability was used to steal emails from individual user accounts shows how valuable a compromised email account is to an attacker and how disastrous the impact of such vulnerabilities is on an organization. Classified documents could be stolen, passwords reset, and members of an organization impersonated to compromise more accounts.

In this blog post, we present how our research team approached Zimbra by taking on the perspective of an APT group. As a result, we discovered a 0-day vulnerability in the unrar utility, a 3rd party tool used in Zimbra. The vulnerability ultimately allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable Zimbra instance without requiring any prior authentication or knowledge about it.

In this section we go into detail about which versions of unrar are affected. Although this blog post focuses on Zimbra to demonstrate the impact of this bug, any software relying on an unpatched version of unrar to extract untrusted archives is affected.

An attacker is able to create files outside of the target extraction directory when an application or victim user extracts an untrusted archive. If they can write to a known location, they are likely to be able to leverage it in a way leading to the execution of arbitrary commands on the system.

In the case of Zimbra, successful exploitation gives an attacker access to every single email sent and received on a compromised email server. They can silently backdoor login functionalities and steal the credentials of an organization's users. With this access, it is likely that they can escalate their access to even more sensitive, internal services of an organization. The only requirement for this attack is that unrar is installed on the server, which is expected as it is required for RAR archive virus-scanning and spam-checking.
