Thefilm initially starred Divya Bharti as the female lead and she had shot most of the film. However, due to her sudden death in 1993, the film was reshot with Sridevi replacing her. The film is the remake of Kannada film Anuraga Aralithu (1986).[2] In the film, a headstrong factory owner marries the union leader of her factory, to quell his spirit and teach him a lesson. In the process, she ends up learning a few lessons herself.
Laadla was released theatrically on 25 March 1994 and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year.[3] Sridevi's performance in a negative role as Sheetal Jaitley was widely acclaimed and earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, while Tandon's performance fetched her a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination.
Raj "Raju" Verma lives with his disabled and paralyzed mother Gayatri. Before a job interview, he saves textile mill owner Laxminarayan Jetley who offers him job in his factory run by his ambitious daughter, Sheetal. Her competitive attitude and open insults result in several enemies including her henchman Tilak Bhandari, whom she often slaps and insults.
As a mechanic, Raju confronts her several times for proper treatment of workers. She is enraged when he turns union leader. Raju falls for the mill's modest worker Kajal. Suryadev, a competing owner tries to eliminate Sheetal. Charismatic, Raju guides her on how to handle rival and the workers. Egoistic and angered, Sheetal slaps him who retaliates this reaching her cabin and slaps her back to back.
Sheetal cannot fire Raju as then she would have to admit and give a proper reason. Vengeful, she convinces Gayatri to get her married to Raju. Reluctantly on Gayatri's order, Raju sacrifices his love for Kajal and marries Sheetal. He lives in his own house and works as a mechanic but moves to Sheetal's luxurious house later upon Gayatri's request. Slowly, he falls in love with Sheetal.
Kajal turns caretaker of Gayatri which results in the betterment of Gayatri's health. Tensions arise when Sheetal eliminates Kajal, seeing Raju kissing her forehead. Later, labour issues cause the workers to go on strike. Competing mill owner for benefit of this hires people to set it on fire. Raju is mistakenly arrested. Gayatri visits Sheetal's house to clarify matters.
Insulted and taunted, she collapses but Raju saves her and slaps Sheetal hard. Guilty, Sheetal who has now feelings for Raju too is kidnapped by Suryadev. Raju rescues her. Sheetal improves herself. Kajal turns managing director of her company, as Sheetal quits her job. Everyone live happily ever after.
Divya Bharti was originally cast in the role of Sheetal and filmed most of her role, but due to her sudden death on 5 April 1993, she could not complete the film. Later, Sridevi was signed to play the role.[4]
It was only yesterday that I posted on the song Azhagiya Mithilai Nagarinile, from the film Annai (1962). I had if you recollect mentioned that the movie was made in Hindi as Laadla with Nirupa Roy in place of Bhanumathi. This morning, I get an email from my dear friend Ramineni Bhaskarendra of Madanapalle, my go to man for all matters cinema and Telugu, that the same sequence was also shot for the Hindi film. And here it is:
Laadla was directed by Raj Kanwar. Initially, Divya Bharti was cast alongside Anil Kapoor and Raveena Tandon. The shoot began in early 1993 and by April, over half of the shoot had been completed. Divya had reportedly completed 70% of her portions. But then on April 5, Divya fell off her balcony and died suddenly at the age of 19. This not only sent shockwaves across Bollywood but also stalled a number of her incomplete films, including Laadla. Eventually, a few weeks later, Sridevi came on board to replace Divya and began reshooting the film from scratch.
In a mysterious turn of events, as Raveena Tandon recalled in an interview with Mumbai Mirror, while filming a scene, Sridevi fumbled at the same line as Divya when she had shot for the sequence before her demise.
As the film 'Laadla' completes 28 years, actress Raveena Tandon, who played a pivotal part in the film, recalls her experience of working with the late Sridevi and Anil Kapoor.
The film, released in 1994, was a love triangle between its three lead actors - Anil, Sridevi and Raveena.
Raveena's performance as the second lead Kajal was widely acclaimed and received Filmfare's Best Supporting Actor nomination too.
Raveena said, "'Laadla was an amazing, very special film for me and working with Sridevi and Anil Kapoor was a lifetime experience which I always cherish."
Directed by Raj Kanwar, initially, actress Divya Bharti was supposed to play one of the lead characters but due to her untimely death in 1993, Sridevi replaced her.
The film also featured Anupam Kher, Farida Jalal, Paresh Rawal among others and was a commercial success at the box office.
The legendary actress of the entertainment industry, Sridevi delivered several memorable characters in her illustrious career and among them was her portrayal of Laadla, where she played young and arrogant industrialist Sheetal Jaitly.
However, you will be surprised to know that she was the first choice for the movie. Divya Bharti, who was the original heroine of the film, shot almost 90 per cent of Laadla but her sudden demise sent shockwaves across the industry.
However, peculiar things started to happen on the set with strange incidents occurring now and then. There was a scene with Shakti Kapoor, Raveena and Divya Bharti, where the latter fumbled a lot during a scene and took numerous takes. And unusually, the same thing happened when Sridevi too stumbled in the same spot during the exact scene which left Shakti and Raveena speechless.
Directed by Raj Kanwar,Laadlafeatured Sridevi and Anil Kapoor, while Raveena Tandon, Anupam Kher, Farida Jalal, Shakti Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Aruna Irani, Mohnish Bahl, and Paresh Rawal play supporting roles.
Late actress Divya Bharti's sudden demise was a shock for the industry back in the day. The actress had signed almost 92 films and all these films had to find a replacement against Divya Bharti. One such film was Anil Kapoor, Raveena Tandon starrer 'Laadla' whose many scenes had already been shot with Bharti but post her death Bharti was replaced by the superstar of all time Sridevi.
Sridevi had to re-shoot all the scenes shot by Bharti. According to sources, when the film started shooting again after 6 months, there were strange incidents on the set. In one scene, Sridevi was accompanied by Shakti Kapoor and Raveena Tandon. Sridevi used to get stuck in the same place where Divya Bharti used to get stuck. Both Raveena Tandon and Shakti Kapoor were stunned by this.
Apart from Laadla, Divya had also signed super hit films like Mohra and Vijaypath but could not complete it as she died untimely only at the age of 19 years. In the late hours of April 5, 1993, Bharti fell off the balcony window of her fifth-floor apartment in Tulsi Buildings, Versova, Andheri West (Mumbai).
Bharti met director-producer Sajid Nadiadwala through Govinda at the shooting of Shola Aur Shabnam, and they were married 10 May 1992. Divya and Sajid were married in a private ceremony in the presence of her hairdresser-friend Sandhya, Sandhya's husband and a Qazi at Nadiadwala's Tulsi Buildings residence (in Mumbai). She converted to Islam after marriage and changed her name to Sana Nadiadwala.
Divya Bharti stepped into the Hindi cinema with the film Vishwatma (1992). It was rumoured back then that Divya would replace Sridevi, but unfortunately, destiny had a different plan for her. Today, both these contemporaries are no more with us but fans shall always cherish them in their memories.
As my cinematic tastes changed, as my benchmarks for determining a performance's worth changed, as my judging of a film performance became linked to my understanding that this was all 'recorded' and 'spliced together', it actually convinced me more of Sridevi's genius.
But, while, in the other actors' performances, you can actually read the director's cues (that is, you can trace their reactions in relation to the camera's movement), her side of the frame almost always remains magically unaffected by the cinematic technique on display -- she's in her own daze, her characters' daze.
Though it was one of those nose-upturned roles right up her alley, she leaves no chance for the 'virtuous wifey' part to emerge in her act, while keeping the character just this side of the archetypal vamp.
Towards this end, the IMPDA has decided to collect Rs. 10 per print from every distributor-member on the film prints they take from the laboratory. The existing levy of Rs. 50 per film at the time of registration, which was introduced to augment the funds of the FFI, stands withdrawn.
The new levy (of Rs. 10 per print) will haveto be deposited with the Association (IMPDA) which would credit the amount to aseparate head for onward transmission to the FFI. It would apply to all printsof new films taken out on and from 1st July, 1994.
The newly constructed hall of Amravati Cine Club in Walkat compound, Amravati, was inaugurated by CCCA president Santosh Singh Jain on June 27. The function was presided over by the mayor of Amravati, Govind Agarwal. It was followed by dinner.
Shammi Kapoor heads the cast of the film which also features Arun Verma, Dinesh Anand and Ghanshyam. In the meanwhile, Aroona Irani has been signed to play an important role. The film has cinematography by Jal Mistry, sound by Anoop Mishra, art direction by Suresh Sawant, lyrics by Anand Bakshi and music by Laxmikant Pyarelal. It is being jointly produced by Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor.
* * Shah Rukh Khan was just not taken seriously. Nobody from the small screen had made it big on the big screen, and Shah Rukh was never considered an exception. One of his earlier films, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, had to literally go hunting for distributors. Today, Shah Rukh has proved to be an exception as also exceptional. He is the rage, the heart-throb, the darling and what not!
