am i the only one who hates the GTK LAF? taking advantage of the quiet
week at work to switch from an old svn evergreen/terminator to ToT
github. (one day i'll ask how to set things up so i can commit too...)

anyway, it turns out my one local change in the svn checkout was
disabling the GTK LAF. i thought i'd give it a try, and i could
probably live with it in Terminator but in Evergreen it's a bit harsh
with all those 1990s bas-relief titlebars. am i doing it wrong, or
does everyone else hate it too?

I don't hate it.  Occasionally I end up with one of the three alternatives (Metal?), perhaps with ssh -X.  It's always a relief to get back to the GTK+ LAF.  I just tried all the three alternatives (Metal: looks like something I once knocked up on my Acorn Archimedes circa 1992; Nimbus: looks like something from the Amiga era, slightly before; Motif: well, it's a Unix system, I know this, but that really is retro) and ran back to GTK+.  At least that looks like the mid to late 1990s.  OpenJDK 1.8.0_171 on Debian.

one day i'll ask how to set things up so i can commit too...

yeah, i agree Metal looks dated, but at least it's relatively subtle.
GTK is just so in-your-face.

it's a pity something more modern-looking isn't built-in.

(bundling our own decent font is something i've long wondered about
too. Roboto and Roboto Mono are APL2.)
