At least that looks like the mid to late 1990s. OpenJDK 1.8.0_171 on Debian.
yeah, i agree Metal looks dated, but at least it's relatively subtle.
GTK is just so in-your-face.
it's a pity something more modern-looking isn't built-in.
(bundling our own decent font is something i've long wondered about
too. Roboto and Roboto Mono are APL2.)
