I've had Terminator fail a few times, to the point where I've started running everything in screen even on my local machine (laptop).

Here's the pop-up message from when it died last (I can send the mentioned logs if desired; please let me know):

An error occurred in Terminator:

Exception RuntimeError: Java failed with #<Process::Status: pid 80273 SIGABRT (signal 6)>

Please send us the contents of the application log, from /Users/jeff.lerman/.terminator/logs/terminator-80253.log.
Please send us the contents of /Users/jeff.lerman/hs_err_pid80273.log.

An idea of what you were doing when Java exited might be useful.

Command line was:
java --illegal-access=debug -Xdock:name=Terminator -Xdock:icon=/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/terminator/lib/Terminator.icns -Dorg.jessies.libraryDirectories=/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/salma-hayek/.generated/universal_Darwin/lib:/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/terminator/.generated/universal_Darwin/lib -Dorg.jessies.binaryDirectory=/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/salma-hayek/.generated/universal_Darwin/bin -Dorg.jessies.terminator.dotDirectory=/Users/jeff.lerman/.terminator -Dorg.jessies.terminator.logDirectory=/Users/jeff.lerman/.terminator/logs -Dorg.jessies.terminator.serverPortFileName=/Users/jeff.lerman/.terminator/terminator-server-port -Dorg.jessies.terminator.optionsFile=/Users/jeff.lerman/.terminator/options -De.gui.HelpMenu.hasManual=true -De.gui.HelpMenu.supportAddress=terminat...@googlegroups.com -De.gui.HelpMenu.supportSite=http://groups.google.com/group/terminator-users -Djava.class.path=/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/terminator/.generated/classes.jar:/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/terminator/.generated/classes:/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/salma-hayek/.generated/classes -De.util.Log.filename=/Users/jeff.lerman/.terminator/logs/terminator-80253.log -De.util.Log.applicationName=Terminator -Dapple.laf.useScreenMenuBar=true -Dorg.jessies.aboutBoxIcon=/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/terminator/lib/terminator-128.png -Dorg.jessies.frameIcon=/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/terminator/lib/terminator-128.png -Dorg.jessies.projectRoot=/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/terminator -Dorg.jessies.supportRoot=/Applications/Terminator.app/Contents/Resources/salma-hayek -Djava.awt.Window.locationByPlatform=true -Dswing.boldMetal=false -Dsun.java2d.d3d=false terminator/Terminator

Bummer.  Looks likely to be Java crashing.  It'll be:

/Users/jeff.lerman/hs_err_pid80273.log

... that has the stuff which might help to Google up an existing bug report.

Attaching that here in case it's helpful.  The crashes seem to happen when screen updates are very frequent, e.g. when I'm paging rapidly through a large file in vim.

I'm not a Java programmer but hopefully there's enough info in there to see what's going on?  I do see a list of exceptions...

Thanks!

Hmm, beaTunes is mentioned in:

You could try reporting it to Oracle or OpenJDK.  A repeatable crash (ouch) sounds like something they might be interested in.  I'm not sure it's a Java programmer you need so much as a C programmer or perhaps even an Objective C programmer.  Someone who has access to and can find the relevant source, anyway.

I had a brief look at those links - thanks!  I noticed while reviewing what you wrote that I was using Java 12.0.1 (build 12.0.1+12), which in retrospect seems unnecessarily risky.  I switched to Java 11 LTS (build 11.0.4+11), and so far so good - the crash has not been reproduced.  I'll keep an eye on it... but it seems plausible that anything ending in *.0.1 might have some stability issues...

It's been some time since I've used Terminator on OS X / macOS (maybe even since the rebranding to 'macOS').  Is it just my imagination or were we able to set colors, fonts, etc. in earlier versions?  Did functionality change or, is my ability to recollect failing me in this instance?

Since we abandoned Snow Leopard compatibility with https://github.com/software-jessies-org/jessies/commit/48c5e21e9b9f7e2d33d2c7c565a84ce6fc83b951, I'm unable to try it, but we can certainly set colors and fonts on Linux and it should all be the same code.  Edit, Preferences, Appearance looks like this for me there:

Maybe the problem is that you've forgotten that the Mac hides preferences on the app menu? Click on the bold Terminator in the menu bar or type (swedish campground symbol)-, to get there?

In Catalina-land (macOS 10.15) I have Terminator from the Google Drive link (Google Drive modified date for the .zip is July 30, 2019)

I'm wondering whether something fell off the wagon at some point.

It seems we do not have a Preferences pane any longer, or any menu item to load it.  Surprised nobody has brought this up.  Hmm.  Well, if I can volunteer a more recent Mac environment, let me know if that might help.

Menu options are relatively sparse.  The Info pane below was found via "File" => "Show Info".

That binary from Google Drive works for me on 10.14 (if I use xattr to remove the quarantine bit)...

Last time I tried to "upgrade" to 10.15 the window manager kept crashing every time I tried to log in, so I ended up having to wipe my device and revert to 10.15. I'll see if I can find a 10.15 device I can use. Still not feeling particularly tempted to waste another day moving _my_ device to 10.15!

That makes me think that you meant 10.9 here:

elliott....@gmail.com                    48c5e21e9b9f7e2d33d2c7c565a84ce6fc83b951:# using libc++ is deprecated. In 2018, no one is still using macOS 10.14.

I'll need to try something earlier.  I've got some versions in my 'fleet' going back to 10.10 Yosemite.  I may or may not have earlier stuff dormant (installed, not running).

Seems 'Preferences' is also missing in Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite.  (attached)

It does not appear in any menu items.  From my cursory glance the menus appear identical to the experience in 10.15.  Is it truly an OS issue or is this something to do about the build?

I think I had this when trying a newer version of Terminator with JDK 8. I'm currently using Terminator with JDK 13 and it works just fine:

$ java -version
openjdk version "13.0.1" 2019-10-15
OpenJDK Runtime Environment AdoptOpenJDK (build 13.0.1+9)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM AdoptOpenJDK (build 13.0.1+9, mixed mode, sharing)

Ah.. maybe my java version is the culprit.  Using whatever janky default version Apple provides.  ;)

% java -version
java version "1.8.0_121"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_121-b13)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.121-b13, mixed mode)

Yeah, 10.14 was still the latest then. Oops!

Sorry, I didn't get chance to look at this last weekend. But, yes, that sounds likely. Iirc my changes were to support Apple's new API because they were saying they were going to remove the old one. Since it was a pain to support both I removed the old implementation so "works on new Java on all OSes, fails on old Java on all OSes" is definitely plausible.

Maybe we should refuse to run on really old Java versions? Iirc the Debian you guys were using didn't have anything non-ancient though, so we couldn't do that (for Linux at least)?

Ok.   brew to the rescue..  `brew install openjdk'

% sudo ln -sfn /usr/local/opt/openjdk/libexec/openjdk.jdk /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/openjdk.jdk
Password:
% java -version
openjdk version "13.0.2" 2020-01-14
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 13.0.2+8)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 13.0.2+8, mixed mode, sharing)

All is well.  Preferences menu is there.  Thanks folks!

At work, I see three developers, somewhat more QA still with Jessie desktops and way more Jessie infrastructure servers.  Jessie doesn’t go beyond Java 8.  We’re still in a half-hearted push to get off Wheezy, Jessie’s predecessor, on infrastructure servers.  We only recently did the work to make work things compile with Java 11.  We still support older branches that require Java to be Java 8.  So we’re somewhat stuck for a while.

Hmm, so why would Java 8 in macOS not work properly?  Seems like you're making the case for "should still work" with Java 8.  Maybe I'm missing the point.

I was talking about work stuff rather than Terminator, in order to reluctantly affirm that Elliott’s:

> the Debian you guys were using didn't have anything non-ancient

... is still current.
