Don't know what changed.  Last week it was still working, now I get (a few minutes after start, apparently spontaneously in an idle session):
--8<--
Uncaught exception

An error occurred in Terminator:

Looking at that line in check_java_version, I'd have thought all it was doing was:

guthomsen@sirius:~$ java -version 2>&1 | cat
openjdk version "1.8.0_181"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_181-8u181-b13-2~deb9u1-b13)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.181-b13, mixed mode)
guthomsen@sirius:~$

... which clearly works for you, on your build server.

a few minutes after start, apparently spontaneously in an idle session

The only thing I can think of that could delay that code path for that long is the optimization to open a new window using an existing process.  You only have one Terminator process, started at 10:43 today.  That was half an hour ago, so it's not quitting.  Indeed, you haven't said that Terminator didn't start or that it was malfunctioning in any other way.  How could you get a terminal window and yet have it not yet having got past check_java_version?
