Ram Navami, the celebrations of the birth occasion of Lord Rama in Ayodhya many centuries ago. Lord Ram is considered the seventh avatar (reincarnation) of Lord Vishnu. He was the epitome of ideal behaviour expected of a human being.

Ram was born to Raja Dashrath and his Queen Kausalya (the other two queens being Sumitra and Kaikeyi). He was born on the ninth day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase fortnight of the moon) of Chaitra, the first month of the Hindu calendar.

Lord Ram is a popular deity for a large percentage of Indians and there are different ways of celebrating Ram Navami. Several cities have a procession each in which floats carrying glimpses from the life and times of the great king and God are featured. Here is everything you wanted to ask about the Shobha Yatra held on Ram Navami eac year.

A Ram Navami Shobha Yatra, as the name suggests, is a grand procession taken out through any city to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Ram. Devotees carry the palki (palkhi) or palanquin with Lord Ram's moorti (idol) placed inside. A number of them break into a dance. or sing bhajans and chant praises to Lord Ram.

Though one may find that most men and women will be wearing saffron headgear - be it chunni for women or be it turbans for men - and yellow kurta/saree, there is no diktat for or against that. People join in, wearing festive colours of their choice. Though some wear footwear, there are others who believe that the Shobha Yatra is akin to visiting a temple and therefore go barefoot.

The most important part of the Shobha Yatra on Ram Navami day is the Palanquin with Ram Lalla (Infant Ram) idol within. After all, the Lord is said to have been born on Ram Navami Day - the ninth day of the month of Chaitra - the first month of the Hindu calendar.
Next is the assigned devotees who will carry the bars of the palkhi or palaki on their shoulders. These strong men will ensure that the palki rests on their shoulders from start to the culmination of the yatra. There are musicians (shehnai and drums etc) who walk along playing their kits.
There are floats on slow-moving vehicles that show glimpses from the life of Shri Ram's life. There are also people dressed as various characters from Ramayan - the epic on the life of Lord Ram - who move around in the Shobha Yatra. On a rath or chariot is a person - a young boy dressed as Ram and a girl dressed as Sita - the Lord's wife. There is also a person who plays Laxman the brother of Lord Ram and someone who plays Hanuman - the most devoted follower of Ramji.

The Ayodhya-based Ram Navami Shobha Yatra has lakhs of devotees taking part in it every year. Lakhs of devotees participate in the Ayodhya procession. In Nagpur, Shri Poddareshwar Ram Mandir on CA Road and Shri Ram Mandir are two famous Ram Navai Shobha Yatras.

The nationwide lockdown and the restrictions in place due to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and efforts to flatten the curve of the march of the novel coronavirus contagion, the nation has shut down all religious function. No rallies, no yatras and no public poojas (worship) allowed.
Therefore there is no Ram Navami Shobha Yatra in 2020.
