I was trying to open a file this morning, and when a pop-menu asked what application I wanted to choose (from a list) to open it, I clicked on Adobe Reader - just as a guess. After that, just about all my desktop icons are Adobe icons, and when I click on them, the pop up menus says I can't access the file. These icons also show up on my menu of all my MS Office programs like Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.

First, thanks for responding. Unfortunately, I don't recall what I was trying to open. And yes, I think I've permanently associated nearly everything with the Adobe file extension. In another post, someone else with the same problem uninstalled the Adobe Reader, which I did, and that took care of my problem for now. He said that when he re-installed it, the problem came back. I haven't tried re-installing it, concerned that I'll have the same problem again. But I'll do that in the next few days to see how that works out.

In the meantime, though, if this problem is the same as the other, I'm not sure I've solved the problem. Can you instruct me on how to reset the file extension? Here's the post from this other person:

From the look of things ot looks like you have associated all .exe's with Adobe Reader and made it as the default association. Thats why any and all applications on your system are trying to open themselves with Adobe Reader.

Can you let me know your OS? This will help in narrowing down your problem, since there are separate steps to resolving the issue as per the OS installed. Also, did you restart your system after performing the mentioned steps?

my daughter was on the computer and opened java. it asked her what program she wanted to use to open and she clicked on adobe. it changed some of my icons to adobe reader icons and when they were clicked on they all opened only adobe reader. I went into safe mode and tried to do a system restore but even there it just opened adobe reader:( I was so frustrated...I eventually decided to just use my restore discs to restore the pc but I have a ton of pictures and wanted to save them first. while I was scrolling through my picture folder, I saw a video that i saved from my phone. I decided to watch it and when I clicked on it, it asked me what program settings I wanted to use. I clicked on "recommended" and the moment I did, all my icons in the sys tray went back to normal...IMMEDIATELY!! so happy this worked to out and I hope it will help someone else. as you can tell I am not computer savvy for repairs, that was my late husbands domain, but I am so glad this worked because I just wanted to throw the computer out the window LOL!

The pdf files that I save to my desktop are saving with an icon showing a picture of the actual file. I don't want that. I just want the Acrobat icon showing. I used to have all my pdf files saved with the Acrobat icon but last week all of a sudden all my files are saving with an icon that shows a picture of the file contents. I didn't change anything. Photo attached of some files saved on my Desktop. How can I get these to show the standard Acrobat icon again?

I spoke too soon! That worked to change those PDF files I had from file photos to the Adobe general icon. However it also changed all my saved photos from showing the photo picture to my Photo app icon. It was easy to see what photo I wanted to open by looking at the photo thumbnail. Now I have hundreds of photos with the exact same Photo app icon. I can change it back but how can I make this change ONLY for my PDF files?

Please update your Acrobat DC and Acrobat Reader DC. The latest patch release (21.001.20142) has the fix for a similar problem. To update from within the product, open Acrobat or Acrobat Reader, and go to Help > Check for updates. Let us know if that fixes your issue.

As thousands of images and videos are produced daily to feed the global pipeline of digital experiences, the release and adoption of this new icon are significant milestones, empowering the advertising and creative industry to begin authenticating client and creative work. With the high volume of content shared on social media platforms, Content Credentials provides a trusted, transparent way for consumers and media to distinguish between what is actually owned or created by brands, and what is being duplicated, replicated or even faked.

Other applications in Creative Cloud have added targeted Content Credentials features, including Firefly Web, Illustrator and Adobe Express. To see how the new Content Credentials icon and transparency features work in Firefly and Photoshop (and coming soon to more Adobe apps!), check out this new video we created.

Thanks for your detailed explanation. That technique works for some people, but not for me. When I chose a different program (other than Acrobat) to Open With, the icon didn't change and was still generic. After rebooting, the icon was still generic, and after choosing to Open With Acrobat, it remained generic.

I am using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro, and that is the default application that opens PDFs on my computer (not Reader). Maybe that's why the technique is not working for me. I already have the most current update for Acrobat 9 Pro.

Another step that wasn't mentioned to me the first time through was that it's not only just a matter of choosing another program, the user clicked Browse and navigated to Microsoft Office and then chose Word as the default program, setting it as the default for all files of that type (PDF). Then after a reboot, did the same thing only navigating to Adobe Reader the second time, and checking to use it as the default.

It's quite likely you or your system administrator emptied a folder that Windows uses for temporary programme installers and for some stupid reason Adobe points the Acrobat PDF icon to some file that was in that folder instead of somewhere more normal, like c:\acrobat\...

Run Acrobat's Update from Help/About. If that does not fix your problems due to an error, your Acrobat installation is buggered although Pro itself works fine/does enough of what you want so keep on going. Reboot and try the next option. I'm sure your Windows XP installation is fine/not affected.

Download Reader 9 from the Adobe website. By default it shows the most current (version 10 at the mo). Click on the link that asks you to download for a different OS but the page that comes up is actually one which allows you to choose back dated Acrobat Readers, just click the choices to move on through.

Go ahead and install Reader 9. It pretty much has everything you need to fix your icons without the faff of uninstalling/reinstalling Pro. And if your Pro installation was as buggered as mine (I couldn't even uninstall the thing because fo what hap[pened after the icons went missing), I could still use Pro for everything that I do.

ONE LAST THING: If in Acrobat the Updater reports an error go to File > Preferences > Updater and change the update setting to Off (not to check for updates). This shuts up the Acrobat warning that pops up saying there's an update to install and which on my system only generated errors because it couldn't find what it needed from my original Pro installation before I got myself into this mess.

Icons and icon sheets are one of the most popular types of vectors for Adobe Stock customers. Anyone who designs marketing materials, layouts, interfaces, and animations needs to be able to find consistent, communicative content quickly for all their projects.

In order to make icons and icon sheets practical and easy-to-use across different projects, we recommend uploading single icons in larger dimensions than typically needed, and icon sheets with consistent padding around each individual asset.

While we accept all vector filetypes, icons are most often used as SVG and PNG files in customer projects. Uploading single icons as SVG files and icon sheets as SVG files (smaller sheets) or AI files (larger sheets) can provide more functionality for experienced vector editors.

Upload single icons with consistent naming and keyword systems and group icon sheets by similar themes or styles so that assets can be easily surfaced and purchased together. Consider how a buyer might need to crop a JPEG version or edit a layered version of the asset when you organize icon sheets.

Hello All. I had the same issue. I am using Windows Home Premium with Service Pack 1. All I did to get the preview of my pdf files was to Open Acrobat Reader PC / Edit / Preferences / General - I then checked the box to "Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer" save your settings let Acrobat Reader do what it needs to do. (this only takes a few seconds) and that is it you will now have your previews.
