CEOOdysseus Athanassiou shares how the project, which began in 2013 and will open in 2026, is progressing. When the 6,200-acre project is fully complete in 2037, it will have brought 80,000 jobs and more than 10 billion euros in tax revenue alone to the country.
There is also an extensive beachfront, which is also open to the public, an urban park (part of which is on the original runway), cultural venues and a center for those with various disabilities. Tourists will be able to scan a QR code to follow a self-guided culture tour of the many monuments and important sites within the park like historic churches and an ancient tomb. The marina that is part of the development hosted the sailing center during the global sporting event.
The park will be home to more than 31,000 trees representing 86 different species plus a million plants native to the Mediterranean region. Many of the trees are being grown in a nearby nursery before they moving them to the project and provide lush greenery and shade to residents and visitors. The goal is for the park to become completely carbon-neutral within the next four decades. It will be one of the largest coastal parks in the world and more than twice the size of Hyde Park in London. This also more than doubles the amount of green space for Athenians.
OA: 95% of residents who have already purchased property are Greeks (either living within the country or from the largest diaspora). The remainder of investors includes people from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and the Middle East, all of which are important markets for the project. Property sales have amounted to more than 600 million euros with that number expected to climb.
Greek publication Neos Kosmos cites data collected by a Dutch research firm pointing to second and third-generation Greek expats increasing their investment in local real estate. Giorgos Gavriilidis, managing director of holiday home experts Elxis, says Greek-Americans make up 17.8% of international investors and Greek-Canadians compose 20.5%.
Even locals have had their say in the project as it was open to public consultation during the design phase. In the early states, there was a problem with local credibility and people believing this project would come to fruition although this is no longer a concern.
By next year, the sports park with soccer fields, pools and tennis courts will be open to the public. And as part of the 15-minute city concept, the beach is no more than 15 minutes away from all parts of the project.
OA: Sustainability is key to this project. There will be special software that monitors waste, energy use and water. Much of the grey water will be used to irrigate the greenery around residences. Rain gardens are used for stormwater management. Riviera Tower is already LEED Gold pre-certified, and its biophiolic exterior is designed to be climate-conscious with a focus on reducing energy use.
OA: Recent changes have overhauled this program, which was initially designed to bring foreign capital to the country. It used to be 250,000 euros were required in a single investment, but that has been updated to 800,000 euros. Limits on these properties keep them from being rented out for short-term use, which helps to build and sustain a neighborhood community feeling.
OA: We hope to turn it into a visitor center or an experience where people can see what a 747 was like from Olympic Airways and experience the original purposes of the former airport.
Does Milos have an airport? Yes, Milos has a small national airport that makes the island easy accessible from the mainland. Milos airport is only 10 min away, 4.7 km, from Adamas by bus or by car.
To move from Milos airport to the main villages or to your hotel you can :
- pickup your rented car from the airport (there are offices inside the airport),
- arrange to be picked up by the hotel,
- take a taxi (you will find them when you exit the airport),
- take the bus (the bus stop is on the main road, you must walk for about 4 min (300 m).
The flight from Athens International Airport El. Venizelos (ATH)to the Airport of Milos (Milos airport code - MLO) is a 40 minutes nonstop flight. During the flight the air hostess offers refreshing drinks, biscuits and often a small sample from local products of Greece.
The airport of Naxos is located approximately 4km southwest from the island's capital. Its IATA airport code is JNX and its runway is only 900m long. It can, therefore, serve small planes only (ATR42, DHC7 and DHC8). There is direct connection with the Athens International Airport and with other European airports via pre-arranged charter flights. The airport was constructed in 1992 and it serves the people of Naxos and the island's tourism ever since. It is at exactly l3704'56" Northand 2522'07" East.
If you do not have your own vehicle, you can access the airport by taxi. Car hire companies use its ample parking space to leave cars previously booked by their clients. Most car rental companies offer this service for free, especially for repeating customers. Similarly, you may also arrange to leave the car there at your departure and leave it at the airport parking for them to pick it up.
Whether you are travelling during low, middle or high season, making a last minute booking for your flights to Naxos and back is not a good idea. If low cost is on your mind and you wish to get the best possible deals available, then make sure you book your tickets as early as possible to benefit from any price discounts available. Timetable of all flights to Naxos is available early enough, with departure and arrival time, total price (with taxes), plane type information and online booking system.
TIP: When travelling from Naxos airport, please keep in mind that you should get there at least 1 hour ahead. It is a rather small airport with only a few facilities and not adequate personnel so, it gets rather busy due to the fact that most travellers get there 30 minutes before their plane departs.
If you are using a charter flight, make sure you contact your local agent for more flight details and additional information. With the airline market being even more competitive, flight companies are reducing their fares by offering vouchers or limited time offers to boost sales and keep cheap rates. It is not uncommon that a ticket from anywhere in Europe to Naxos will cost cheaper than the ticket from Athens to Naxos, even though the distance is much greater.
Flight schedule is rather accurate. That does not mean that there are no delays for both arrivals and departures. You may use a flight tracker such as Flight Aware to estimate the exact arrival time of your flight. Flight Board is another great application from Apple that informs you on the status of each flight as it has access to all arrivals and departures for any airport on the planet. These two major tools, together with any ticket finder will help you find the best available fare online. Should you encounter any difficulty, you can always contact a Naxos flight agency and request further assistance.
On the map below, you may see the exact location of the Airport of Naxos and the proposed route from the capital's central square (Plateia Protodikeiou). Duration of the drive depends on the traffic, so make sure you depart early enough to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
Relative to other airports in Greece, Athens Airport (code: ATH) is relatively new and modern. It has a main terminal with two halls (A and B) and a satellite terminal, which opened in May 2018. The terminals are connected by an underground tunnel with a moving sidewalk and an above-ground walkway.
Amenities at Athens Airport are simple and to the point. Several restaurants are open 24 hours a day, and there are art installations and a museum to keep you entertained briefly at least. WiFi is available to pass the time. For those looking for a little added comfort, there are first-class lounges that economy-class passengers can pay to access. See Airport Lounges in the guide below for locations and access information.
When the prospect of sleeping on the floor or in a chair is giving you nightmares, there are options for those of you who are looking to sleep at Athens Airport in comfort. While there are no transit hotels, there are nearby hotels that are accessible by foot or airport shuttles.
Regardless of what class of service you are flying, there are lounges that you can enter by purchasing a lounge pass or through a lounge membership program. Visit the individual lounge page for more details about the lounge itself and find out how you can gain lounge access with just an economy class ticket!
If you need to pick up groceries on your way home to your destination in Athens, stop at the airport mini market AB Vassilopoulos. Fresh produce, baked goods, cleaning supplies, and general groceries are available. Location: Arrivals Level, Landside.
If your travels include taking a ferry, you can connect from the airport via Metro Line 3 (then at Monastiraki transfer to Metro Line 1) with a total journey time of 60 minutes. Alternatively, the bus Route X96 Piraeus will also provide access to the port of Piraeus.
