I refuse to accept the unrealistic daily step goal of 10,000 steps. Unrealistic success stories and fitness goals are the cause of many discouragements and failure of good willing people to improve their health condition. You, fitbit, have no civic conscience by stating that some heart or other health association claims that a number a so high # of steps is a minimum for health condition.
I am 75 years old and have a brisk walk of 5000-8000 steps per day (35 - 45 minutes), 4 - 5 times a week; I have an excellent heart condition, and, am otherwise very healthy.
You might believe that the CDC's goal is for people to have sexy bodies. I happen to believe that they are more concerned with general health, although I expect healthy bodies are often also better-looking.

I have never seen any such statement by Fitbit, and challenge you to show where Fitbit ever said that. 10,000 steps is the default step goal set by Fitbit but you are able to change that, or any other goal, as you wish. Many people think that having goals encourages one to exercise more. What number of steps do you think Fitbit should choose as the default daily step goal? And what is your reference to show that as a good goal? If Fitbit set the daily default daily step goal to 1,000 steps, would that make you feel better? Do you think that would make more people feel sexy? Or do you think there should not be any goals set?
Sorry to hear about this. I think there has been a misunderstanding but @JohnnyRow has given you a great explanation. The 10,000 steps goal is based on the CDC recommendation for daily activity. Still everyone is different and may require different goals, this is why you can edit said goal (you can follow these instructions to change said goal).
There are many different situations and you can use your Fitbit device as a tool to guide you to reach your particular goal. There are cases in which 10,000 may be too low as the user is striving for a higher count and there are also the opposite cases. I have heard from members coming out from a surgery were they state that they can't even walk 1000 steps daily but that they are happy trying to reach that goal and are recovering and working to increase the amount of activity they do.
Tap 'Steps' and replace 10,000 with whatever you like, such as 7000. Then tap 'OK' in the Steps Goal box. Then use left arrows near top right of screen to get back to main page, which should show new goal. On next sync, that goal should also get transferred to your watch.
