Actor Stephen Fry is an audiobook legend. In addition to voicing the hysterical Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, he also did his own take on the Harry Potter franchise. This time, he takes on another titan of British literature: Sherlock Holmes. He reads all four novels and five collections of short stories featuring the world's greatest detective in a classic series mystery buffs will love.
This humorous biography of Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette is narrated by an all-star, A-team lineup of comedians, including Patton Oswalt, Fred Armisen, John Hodgman and Nick Offerman. It's still on Amazon's bestseller list for audiobooks, even though it came out in 2015. Even if you aren't a history person, this one is worth your time.
Harry Potter needs no introduction, but the audiobook can be a great way to start kids off on the series. British actor Jim Dale's whimsical take on each of the characters' voices gives the story a renewed sense of wonder, so you'll fall even more in love with all of your favorite Hogwarts inhabitants.
True confession time: I once laughed so hard while listening to David Sedaris that I nearly fell off a treadmill. So maybe sit down before you turn on this audiobook that features Sedaris moving to France and butchering the language, among other too-funny tales.
Lots of audiobooks have won awards, but this one has also broken records: It won a spot in the Guinness World Records for the "most character voices in an audiobook." If you're counting, that's 224 characters to be exact. According to the record, Roy Doltrice gives each of them a "distinct and distinguishable" voice, a real feat for any actor.
What does the collapse of a massive Ponzi scheme have to do with a woman mysteriously disappearing from a ship between ports of call? You'll just have to tune into this masterful audiobook from the author of Station Eleven and Sea of Tranquility.
This stunning collection about Indigenous Latina women living in the Northwest will break your heart open, and the sensitivity and range of the cast that reads them is astounding. Short stories make great audiobooks for dipping into one at a time, so turn to this one if you don't have long stretches to fill.

In The Importance of Being Earnest Oscar Wilde turns the absurd and farcical into sheer brilliance. The audio dramatization I listened to was performed by a very talented cast from L.A. Theatre Works: James Marsters, Charles Busch, Emily Bergl, Neil Dickson, Jill Gascoine, Christopher Neame and Matthew Wolf. The rapid-fire banter between the characters was hilarious. At just under 2 hours in length, this audiobook was a real treat that left a big smile on my face. Find out more >>

This list of audiobooks is the next step up with stories that run somewhere between an hour and three hours. These are audiobooks my nearly-six year old LOVES listening to and comes back to again and again.
Encyclopedia Brown Boy Detective by Donald J. Sobol

The mysteries in this are very episodic, which makes them great for reading here and there, rather than having to get all the way through. And my girls love trying to solve the mystery without reading the answers in the back.
Thus begins a plot that could only happen in the present day, as Emira struggles to navigate racial issues and potential social media scandals, all while trying to hold together a job, a social life, and some semblance of sanity. Narrated in Nicole Lewis' confident (and confidential) tone, Such a Fun Age is one of those best audiobooks that feels like listening to a friend confess the latest details of their own life.
Is there anyone more suited to narrate a Sherlock Holmes audiobook than Stephen Fry? We think not. With his droll wit and the rich, rolling tones of his voice, Fry brings a distinguished air to these classic mysteries that would fit right in to the drawing room at 221B Baker Street.
The Shining was great as an audio book. I listened to it while driving and would look over my should ALL THE TIME because I was so spooked. Stephen King is truly an amazing writing. Also Dracula was great! Different performers are used for each character which really helps bring it to life!
So in all these years that I have been listening to books I have accumulated a pretty good list of my personal favorite/best audiobooks that I recommend often to people whether someone is new to audiobooks or they are just looking for a new recommendation! And today I want to share them in the event you are looking for some good audiobooks to listen to!
This book was a delight! If you are looking for something on the lighter side with a whole lot of heart, this is it. The performance is done by actresses Daisy Edgar-Jones and Alison Steadman and they just nail the alternating perspectives of the grandmother and grandaugther. It was just a performance that had me smiling a whole lot. I think I would have definitely enjoyed it if I read it but the audiobook definitely enhanced it for me. Some romance, some self-discovery and some great family dynamics.

Stanley Yelnats isn't so surprised when a miscarriage of justice sends him to a juvenile detention center. After all, his family has been ridden with bad luck ever since a one-legged gypsy put a curse on his great-great grandfather. He is told that the hard labor he must perform, digging five-foot holes in the dried up soil where Green Lake once sat, is meant to build character.
Four adventurous siblings - Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie - step through a wardrobe door and into the land of Narnia, a land frozen in eternal winter and enslaved by the power of the White Witch. But when almost all hope is lost, the return of the Great Lion, Aslan, signals a great change...and a great sacrifice.
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!
Kendra and her brother Seth have no idea their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws give relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken, an arcane evil is unleashed, forcing Kendra and Seth to face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save her family, Fablehaven, and perhaps the world, Kendra must find the courage to do what she fears most.
Rich in suspense and brimming with adventure, the New York Times-bestselling Underland Chronicles unfold the fate of the Underland and the great warrior, Gregor. Suzanne Collins is also the author of the bestselling Hunger Games trilogy.
A talented audiobook narrator makes for a memorable listening experience. Great audio performances elevate and enhance a book and pull you in, going beyond on-paper reading for an immersive event. I feel the same joy discovering an excellent narrator as I do when finding a new favorite author.
If a narrator has a long backlist of titles (books that are already published, or in this case, recorded), there are hours and hours of listening ahead of you. Services like Libro.fm, Audible, and other audiobook services allow you to search by narrator, and I make good use of this feature. Many narrators also have websites listing their notable works or, sometimes, their entire audiobook catalog.
Loved that one too. I think it helps that the reader can read the way the story goes with the sarcasm etc. Hope Davis is a great reader also. She read two other Ann Patchett books that were very good. State of Wonder was a great story with a great reader.
Jorjeanna Marie has an exquisite alto voice and can do both female and male voices beautifully and realistically. Tom Clancy is not a genre I usually listen to, but my husband insisted I listen to Lou Diamond Phillips interpretation and I became a fan. A well done narration can elevate a book from good to great!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this! I love listening to audiobooks while doing mundane chores. A narrator definitely makes or breaks the book! I am so excited to check out some of these new recommendations!
So many excellent narrators mentioned and a few new to me ones as well. Katherine Kellgren who narrated the Bloody Jack series and Royal Spyness series is amazing. Great fun! Bloody Jack is a great family listen since it appeals to all ages. Sadly, Katherine Kellgren was taken too soon in 2018. The world lost a very gifted artist.
