CHICAGO: VI DECADES LIVE (THIS IS WHAT WE DO) will be available on April 6 for $64.98. The songs in the collection were recorded between 1969 and 2014, including the band's entire performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. The DVD features a concert that was originally broadcast on the German music television show Rockpalast (a WDR production) in 1977. The set comes with a 24-page booklet illustrated with rare images selected from the band's vast archive.
The first two discs are dedicated to Chicago's headlining performance at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 28, 1970. It's a snapshot of the band on the verge of superstardom and captures them in top form, playing songs from their first two albums - "Beginnings" and "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" - as well as "Mother" from their third album, which was unreleased at the time. The other two headliners on this 3-day festival were The Doors and Jimi Hendrix.
The remaining discs include live performances selected from six decades, starting with a trio of songs recorded in Paris in 1969: "Poem For The People," "25 Or 6 To 4" and "Liberation." Other highlights include deep tracks like "A Hit By Varse" (1973), "Takin' It On Uptown" (1977) and "Forever" (1987), in addition to songs from Chicago's 1994 big band tour: "In The Mood" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore."
Chicago is turning 50, and the band is celebrating the landmark anniversary with a new box set looking back on its remarkable onstage history. On April 6, Rhino will release Chicago: VI Decades Live (This is What We Do), featuring 4 CDs and 1 DVD of previously unreleased live music recorded between 1969 and 2014. This exciting new collection coincides with the group's current tour in which they're playing the complete Chicago II every night before a lengthy encore set of greatest hits.
The first two discs capture the band's complete, raw, early performance at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 28, 1970 as they shared a bill with The Doors and Jimi Hendrix. You'll hear songs from their first two albums including "Beginnings" and the multi-part "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" (including "Make Me Smile" and "Colour My World," as well as "Mother" from their third album, which hadn't yet been released.
Discs 3 and 4 have a total of eighteen selections culled from six decades of live shows beginning with three songs taken from a December 8, 1969 show in Paris ("Poem for the People," "25 or 6 to 4," and "Liberation"). The discs continue with a number of collector-oriented deep cuts and just a sprinkling of hits like "If You Leave Me Now" (Oakland Coliseum; December 1, 1977) and "Look Away" (an acoustic version from A&E's Live by Request in 2002). A March 1987 Pensacola show has yielded Robert Lamm's "Forever" and a soulful medley of "In the Midnight Hour," "Knock on Wood" and "I'm a Man" with the then-recent "Get Away." A couple of standards ("Night and Day" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore") have been taken from the 1994 big band tour previewing the next year's Night and Day album. The eight songs on Disc 3 all feature the guitar wizardry of Terry Kath, while Disc 4 picks up after his tragic passing on January 23, 1978 with Greek Theater performances from later that year of "Hot Streets" and "Little One," which Kath had sung on Chicago XI.
On February 12, 1977, Chicago played live on the German music television show Rockpalast . The entire concert is included here in its DVD premiere. Here's where you'll hear more of the band's biggest hits like "Saturday in the Park," "Just You 'n' Me," and "(I've Been) Searching So Long" plus a cover of The Beatles' "Got to Get You Into My Life." As a bonus, the DVD also includes the band's performance of "What's This World Comin' To" from the 1973 ABC television special Chicago In The Rockies.
Chicago: VI Decades Live (This is What We Do) captures the strength and power of the various lineups over the years of the legendary band started by Peter Cetera, Terry Kath, Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, Jimmy Pankow, Walt Parazaider, and Danny Seraphine. The Folksong Revival was a dynamic cultural event with its origins in the early 20th century. By the mid-1960s, it had captured American popular music, inspired a generation of folklorists, and served to reintroduce the United States to its vernacular musical roots. Fortunately some of the legendary artists of the 1920s and 1930s were rediscovered and performed at festivals and concerts.
This DVD illustrates well the mingling of old and new within the framework of old-time, cajun, blues and folk music. It focuses on traditional instruments, i.e. the ancient mouth bow, autoharp, fiddle, banjo, accordion, diddley-bow, as well as the piano and guitar.
George Thorogood is an American icon. In a career that stretches back to the mid-seventies, he and his band The Destroyers have released 16 studio albums with worldwide sales in excess of 15 million. 2013 saw George & The Destroyers make their long overdue debut at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival. Performing at an event that had previously played host to many of their musical heroes inspired the band to produce one of their finest performances on a set list that stretched back to their eponymous debut album from 1977 and right up to their most recent releases. This is goodtime rocking blues and nobody does it better than George Thorogood & The Destroyers.
