Acaf is a type of restaurant which typically serves coffee and tea, in addition to light refreshments such as baked goods or snacks. The term "caf" comes from the French word meaning "coffee".

A caf setting is known as a casual social environment where you can find people reading newspapers and magazines, playing board games, studying or chatting with others about current events. It is also regarded as a place where information can be exchanged.

A caf is sometimes called a coffeehouse or a coffee shop or tea shop in English, a caf in French and a bar in Italian (cafe, a misspelling due to the difficulty of typing the accented "", and caf are the common spellings used in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese et al. However, the word is spelled "caff" in Italian). It shares some characteristics of a bar and some characteristics of a restaurant given its selection of foods and beverages served, but is distinct from a cafeteria which is a type of restaurant where customers can choose from many dishes displayed on a serving line. In some countries, cafs are designed to more closely resemble restaurants whereby offering a range of hot meals and possibly licensed to serve alcohol. Most British cafs however, do not sell alcohol likely due to the prominent pub culture.

In the Netherlands, cannabis-selling cafs face an uncertain future under a planned new law banning smoking in public places. The cafs, which attract millions of tourists each year, allow customers to buy marijuana over the counter and openly smoke it. The acronym CAFE, Cannabis and Fine Edibles is used in Canada to represent the largest retail chain in the country, post-legalization.

Another type of caf, known as the Internet caf, was introduced in the 1990s and went hand in hand with the rising prevalence of computers in society. Computers and Internet access in a contemporary atmosphere created a youthful, modern public space compared to existing locales including traditional bars and old-fashioned diners. Nowadays, many cafs offer public wireless Internet or even have computers, telephones, and newspapers for customer use. Further integrating internet usage to the caf atmosphere, some stores like Starbucks allow you to order directly from your smartphone, tablet, or other devices through their free store app or websites online.

More recently alongside the growing popularity of geek and gaming culture, gaming cafs have also begun to open in cities worldwide. These cafs offer a library of board games and tabletop games, from childhood classics such as Monopoly to indie games, for customers to play at their leisure for a nominal fee.

Named for Francis Coppola's venerable production company, American Zoetrope, Cafe Zoetrope is located in the majestic Sentinel Building, a San Francisco historic landmark in the heart of North Beach. We are a European-style cafe and offer authentic Italian cuisine and a wide selection of Italian and California wines, including our premium offerings that we carry exclusively at our wineries, cafes and website. One-of-a-kind mementos spanning Francis' long and celebrated film career decorate the walls while the awnings and heated sidewalks make it comfortable to dine outside even in foggy San Francisco weather.

The Sentinel Building

Cafe Zoetrope is located in the historic Sentinel Building on the corner of Kearny and Columbus. One of the most photogenic and recognizable structures in North Beach, the Sentinel Building is lush with history.

Abe Ruef was a notorious political boss and lawyer in San Francisco in the early 1900s. He gained notoriety as the corrupt political boss behind the administration of Mayor Eugene Schmitz of San Francisco during the period before and after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Ruef's political machine gradually gained control of the Chief of Police, the Board of Supervisors, and several judges. A Federal investigation into corruption at City Hall indicted Ruef and at the time of his trial, Ruef occupied offices in the Sentinel Building.

In 1958 a Dutch businessman, Robert Moor, purchased the building as an investment at the urging of his architect, Henry Bull, who did not want to see the deteriorating building be torn down. Bull did extensive renovations on the building and a year and a half later it was sold to the Kingston Trio. They renamed it Columbus Tower and turned the basement into a recording studio where they recorded much of their work. Many other musicians and musical groups were allowed to utilize this studio, including the Grateful Dead.

Francis Ford Coppola bought the building in 1972 to be the headquarters for his production company, American Zoetrope. A number of his films including the Godfather II and III, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, One From The Heart, The Outsiders, and Dracula were written, edited, or sound mixed within these walls.

Cafe Zoetrope, opened in 1999, was created with much thought from Coppola. Many of the items on the menu are his own recipes and the European ambience is something he cultivated. The Cafe functions as a wine bar and a restaurant in the style of a Roman Trattoria.

Our goals are simple: to establish friendly, community-based vegetarian restaurants, cafes and bakeries that can stand as model businesses dedicated to nurturing the well-being of our planet. We take pride in offering an array of food and beverages crafted from locally-sourced, organic, and sustainable ingredients.

Absolutely delicious! My wife and I love this restaurant. She is vegan so we are so happy to have a Madison restaurant that caters to her! Me, I am a meat eater that would give up meat for a meal (or 2, since I once ate both lunch and dinner here on the same day ), to eat here without hesitation...

I absolutely loved the food here! The food was ready faster than I had expected even though they said it would be a 45 minute wait. I ordered the Crabby Cakes with the Kale Crisps. The bread was perfectly toasted and the food was super good considering it was plant based.

Came here for an appetizer because the wait next door was so long. They said it would be a 40 min wait but we probably got it in 20. The crab cake po boy was very tasty. The bread, the crunch, the sauce, all super flavorful and balanced. Kale chips were also flavorful with a nice crisp and chew.

Ordered online and pickup was seamless. There are lots of picnic tables outside the front of the cafe to sit and eat. The pesto veggie sandwich was absolutely delicious and the fries were some of the best I've had. I wish I could try everything on the menu!

Delicious vegan option! I had the pesto Alfredo pasta and it was soooo good. Tons of yummy mushrooms, broccoli and cauliflower and the sauce was to die for. You'd never know it was vegan but I'm so glad it is. I'll be ordering again for sure.
