I use my laptop to work on a number of Microsoft Word documents located on my home desktop. Lately, every so often and without my doing anything unusual, typing characters into the Word document suddenly makes a random Word or Microsoft pop-up window pop up and I cannot type any characters. Clicking anything will make the pop-up window go away, but it comes right back the moment I type a character. This ONLY happens when I'm using Word on the home desktop through LogMeIn on my laptop. It does not happen on any other home desktop programs, and it never happens when I'm at home typing in Word directly to the desktop. It's rarely the same pop-up window that pops up and stops my typing. Sometimes it's the Windows Explorer window, sometimes it's a menu window for Word, sometimes something else. Another variation is that sometimes my typing will work fine unless I type a CERTAIN character. (Yesterday, I got a pop-up window every time I typed the letter L.) As this problem never happens when I'm working on the desktop directly, but only when accessing it through LogMeIn, it seems clear it is a LogMeIn issue. Is there a solution?

Suddenly, sometime in the past week or so, when I tried to use Word 2016 in an LMI session to a rather new Dell laptop, the characters on the screen change to black "highlight" when I attempt to edit any words the document, then Word locks up cold.

* I did an online repair of Office (it was initially Home and Business 2016). It totally corrupted my install of Office and then automatically uninstalled It. I have been working with Microsoft Office for decades and have never seen this!

Is there any resolution to this issue? We are using Office 365 but have Word, Excel, Outlook downloaded to our PC's. I have one user in our office who is also having the same issue with Word and is also having problems seeing the ribbon bar in Outlook.

I am using Dropbox (v206.5) on my iPad (up to date with IOS 14.01) and for most word documents I am able to open them from Dropbox app and edit them in word with no problem. Periodically, when I open them, the document will open in word, but I am unable to make changes to the document (can't even type or change text). I have checked to make sure that the documents are not "read only" and I when I try to open the documents on another device (my iMac), I am able to open and modify the documents with no problem. I have also check to make sure that the documents are not open on any other device. I have also tried to uninstall and re-install both the Microsoft word app and the Dropbox app on my iPad. Any other ideas on what may be going on? thanks in advance.

At first it seemed like it was intermittent files but now it's every word file in the Dropbox folder that is shared between myself and 3 other people. The file attributes are definitely not set to "read only", and I am able to edit them from a PC and an iMac just fine without issue.

When I open the file using the "open button" on my iPad, it opens Microsoft Word app which I am signed into using a 365 subscription. When I tap the screen to move the cursor to where I want to edit, the keyboard simply does not respond. I cannot type, backspace, delete or edit in any way. I also tried to export a copy of the file locally to my iPad and the exact same thing happens.

It must be something with either the Dropbox app or the Microsoft word app. I deleted the Dropbox for iPad app and went to the site via the website and I am able to open the files with "word for the web" and modify them without any issues. I had to delete the Dropbox app to open in "word for the web" otherwise when I clicked the link, automatically opened the Dropbox app, which forces me to use the word app.

@Daphne @Walter Confirming that I am indeed logged into my Microsoft 365 account and the "read only" banner is not shown. The only thing that happens is when I go to modify the document, it will not let me change anything.

Further, it would be nice to have the choice to open documents through the app with a different word processor, like Pages. Not sure if that is in the works or can be passed to the development team. I'm sure I can't be the only one with that request given that Microsoft requires a subscription and Pages does not.

Would you mind sending a screenshot of what you see when you try and edit the file @AdamFerg? Even perhaps a short screen recording.

Also, you should be able to open the file in other apps, like Pages, by exporting with these steps.

If you try exporting the file to Pages, or another app, do you have the same trouble editing it?

In addition, I can no longer click on weblinks in Outlook email
messages (which I always could do). I guess this suggests a UAC/
protect us from ourselves problem. It seems we are all Thinkpad people -- is that a common link here? Will

This is a bug with Password Manager part of the Lenovo Client Security
Solution (v. 8.30.0031.00). The solution is:Click Start and type "password vault"
Click "Password Vault" (listed under Control Panel in the Start Menu)
Click "Set Preferences" in the menu
Under the General tab, uncheck "Enable hot keys"
Click OK
Close Password Vault
Log off (or reboot) and log back inWatch out for an update to the Client Security Solution application from
Lenovo in the future if you would like to use hot keys. Thanks for bringing this solution to our attention.

2)When you open an existing Word document you are able to use the mouse as
usual to move the insertion point cursor to different sections of the
document, to select objects (like pictures) within the document, and to
highlight existing text as expected. As soon as you type anything new
anywhere in the document the mouse can no longer be used to move the
insertion point to another location in the document nor can it select text or
objects. The arrow and shift keys still allow you to move around the
document and select objects.

3)When you create a new document you are able to type normally and use the
Enter key to add text to the Word document. As soon as you type anything in
the document the mouse can no longer be used to move the insertion point to
another location in the document nor can it select text or objects. The
arrow and shift keys still allow you to move around the document and select
objects.

4)You CAN use the mouse to select Word menus and buttons on the ribbon bar
but you cannot use the mouse on or inside the Word document itself once the
condition occurs after typing begins. The mouse works fine and as expected
in Excel and every other application.

Similar symptoms have been reported by others using Word 2007 and 2003 on
Windows 7, Vista, and XP but I have not found an acceptable solution to this
problem with this system configuration. It seems related to some kind of UAC
or permission problem or is 64-bit specific but I am not certain.

- Tried (twice) to rename the original,
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data" registry key as
suggested in these posts. The new Data key gets created by Word and new
values are added to the registry key but problem remains.

I only had 3 Add-ins showing as active, all from Microsoft. Two Visual
Studio Tools for Office COM Add-ins and one Smart Tag "Person Name" add in.
I ran Word as admin so I could disable both of the COM Add-ins. I renamed
the FNAME.DLL file so the "Person Name" Add-in would not load because the

Word 2007" shortcut in the start menu, chose Compatibility tab, and chose
that option under privilege level. Without running Word as administrator I
have been unable to eliminate these mouse problems.

- Once you force Word to Run as admin, you now get the annoying warning
prompt from Windows that asks you if it is okay to run as admin every time
you start Word. This would be an almost tolerable workaround if all you ever
did was create brand new Word documents. If you want to work on an existing

1) If you want to open an existing Word document from either the Windows 7
recent jump list menu or by double-clicking a Word doc file, the delay caused
by the UAC prompt every time you start Word generates an error of, "There was
a problem sending the command to the program.", and the document you wanted
to open is not loaded into Word. You get the Word shell launched with no
document. The only way to open an existing document while running as admin
and getting the UAC prompt is to launch Word with no document or a new blank
document and then manually open the existing document you really wanted via
the Word menus.
