In this book-turned-series, viewers journey alongside three orphans who are trying to uncover their parents' mysterious demise while pursued by the wicked Count Olaf, here played by Neil Patrick Harris, who gamely expands on a role first tackled by Jim Carrey. With its lightly macabre menace, this is perfect for older kids looking for something a little more subversive.

With hyper-styled Japan-adjacent cuteness and roster of wide-eyed characters, the sprawling True series centers on a little girl transported to a technicolor kingdom where she is granted three wishes per episode to solve magical problems with practical answers. The series is a visual feast loaded with ninja cats, morose clouds and friendly monsters, and its wry humor and emotional beats should appeal to young kids and parents alike.

The Magic School Bus rides again! The '90s gem follows Ms. Frizzle and her class as they journey on epic field trips. Now, a new generation is ready to devour the lovable series, with SNL's Kate McKinnon pulling voice duty as the world's most cosmic teacher.

British stop-motion masters Aardman keeps things light and wry with this series spun off of its beloved Shaun the Sheep film, focusing on the day to day adventures of its titular hero. The animation, as always, is top-notch, while the humor provides more than enough to keep parents chuckling as the kids are dazzled.

A fish-out-of-water tale for the horse-girl set, this not-exactly sequel to Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron leans into themes of friendship and empowerment with the story of a city girl who moves to a railroad boom town. And while it sounds like a dad-focused revisionist western, the playful antics and themes of resiliance have served it well over the course of 10 seasons thanks to its fully realized characters and great big heart.

With nods to Harry Potter, The Worst Witch books come to life in this charming, fantastical Netflix series. During season four, the odd-witch-out, Mildred, competes against Ethel in a slew of magical pursuits in order to be named Head Girl.

This modern-day Mr. Wizard featuring extremely peppy (and extremely pregnant) scientist Emily Calandrelli was the savior of STEM-starved parents during the pandemic thanks to the host's enthusiasm for learning and its DIY science experiments, which challenge young kids to turn their back yards into labs using household items. This is entertainment mixed with hands-on learning at its finest.

Created by Guillermo del Toro, this CG series is actually spread over three different shows: Trollhunters, 3Below, and Wizards. They all center around the small fictional town of Arcadia Oaks, a suburban home to the supernatural and magical. Each show focuses on a different cast of characters, all of whom must, in some way, save the world. Their stories converge in the animated film Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, which premieres July 21 and sees the heroes try to save Arcadia from an apocalyptic magical battle.

For working and single parents with small children, one of the less dire but still persistent challenges of staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic has been finding ways to educate and entertain kids while working from home.

As the daughter of a media scholar whose research revolves primarily around representations of gender and race, my six-year-old has very little tolerance for shows and movies without compelling female characters.

Based on the 1980s cartoon parents might remember from the Saturday mornings of our childhoods, the She-Ra reboot (developed by Noelle Stevenson) features a familiar cast in wonderfully updated new incarnations.

Now a reformed thief, Carmen hopes to expose her former V.I.L.E. colleagues, destroy their operation and donate the stolen goods to charity. The show is better suited to older children due to the complexity of its story line, but the appeal of a Robin Hood/James Bond type action heroine is timeless.

Developed by Lauren Faust (creator of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), the new DC Super Hero Girls show is based on a popular web series of the same name. Like its predecessor, the show features a host of familiar comic book villains and heroes as teenagers in 10-15 minute mini-episodes.

I have been thinking more and more about how I am going to put good influences and shows in front of my children. Kids respond to and are so apt to watch videos with all of our increasing technology. We MUST find good things for them to watch. I totally understand this.

They say children are like sponges. Yes, my 2-yr-old son has lately been repeating everything I say. This is a vital brain development stage. I want him to develop with Christian influences so that what we teach him will be reinforced.

However, rest assured this post will give you all the links to each individual video resource for you to check out. I am so excited to do this for you! Please enjoy the wonderful resources that others have created.

Just watching a few minutes of the show that was streaming live, is meant for an older kid or for a family watching. We all know that the stories in the Bible are not violent-proof or sin-free. It seems these shows are portraying the stories accurately.

This channel has a story of the Birth of Jesus for the family to watch together. It has videos from different languages as well, which is really cool if you are in a bilingual family or teach your children different languages from an early age.

A channel with half-hour episodes of Bible stories for children to watch. These would be great as a family or as a little something in the morning or after-school hours. Super helpful for children to learn the awesome stories from the Bible.

The downside of YouTube for me is waiting through all of the commercials. At times, they are family-friendly. Other times, not so much, especially if they are promoting the latest gross or scary movie, or talking about contraception.

Another option is using ViewPure. It takes a little more work, but you can copy and paste the desired YouTube link into their website, and it will show you the video without ads, comments, or any other info other than the video. This is super great to limit distractions and to keep the content as clean as possible.

Minno features the ever-popular Veggie Tales, as well as Owlegories, Bible Notes with Cliff, 3 2 1 Penguins!, Davey and Goliath, and many many more. I will admit I have never heard of any of them except for Veggie Tales, but the site is created by Phil Vischer, who is a pretty cool guy himself.

Ironically, I came across Pure Flix while using YouTube one day. These are family-friendly movies that also come with a small price to subscribe to. You can watch anywhere online with any device or with your Television. Great options for all families here!

Your options are to pay $99.99 a year, or $10.99 a month. The prices are a little bit closer to Netflix, but as the quality of content is better, I say go for it. This option would be great if you regularly engage in a family movie night at your house. They house almost every genre with a special section for kids aged 1-10!

I love it when a service breaks things down and makes them super simple to use. While I would recommend still watching a bit of the show or pre-watching before the kids get to view it, having services like this can bring a whole lot more peace of mind to the entertainment part of a family dynamic.

These are not religious-centric shows. However, they are very educational and mostly (not so much as it used to be) clean. You can watch it on television and also on the viewing app. There are also games to play if you want.

The primary reason that such entertainment exists is to let us relax while enjoying something that somebody skillfully created! Watching a movie should be something we do together with our families, where adult supervision and explanations, and eyes can be present at all times.

But parents may not want the kids to watch episodes of "Clifford the Big Red Dog," though I don't know why because he's adorable, or "Happy Birthday Barney," which I totally get can grind on a parent's last nerve.

  • Click on "Manage Profiles" from the Netflix website.
  • Change the "Kids" profile to "Adult" and unclick the "Kids" profile.
  • Then enter the "Kids" profile and move to the offending show. Click the "Thumbs Down" icon, which will gray out the shows.
  • Block all the shows you don't want your kids to watch by clicking the "Thumbs Down" icon.
  • Return to "Manage Profiles" and change the "Kids" profile back to kids by checking the box.
  • Choose either "For Little Kids Only" or "For Older Kids and Below."

Now is a great time for children to learn a foreign language. Research shows that people learn languages much more easily in childhood than they do in adulthood. In addition to that, learning a second language comes with a ton of benefits including better opportunities later on in life.

As mentioned before, interaction is paramount. At TruFluency Kids, we believe in the Bellieu Method. The Bellieu Method in summary is making communication the forefront of language learning, using relevant, everyday vocabulary that everyone will use on a daily basis. We believe in focusing on listening and speaking, just like kids learned their first language.

The science shows listed below are specifically good for kids in Kindergarten through fifth grade and cover topics especially interesting to them: animals, space, the Earth, the human body, and so much more.

The Magic School Bus is a classic show that is still relevant today. Ms Frizzle covers topics from geology and dinosaurs to weather and the water cycle. If there is a science topic you want to learn more about, The Magic School Bus probably has an episode for you. Pair the program with a Magic School Bus picture book for extra reinforcement.
