Bharathiis a 2000 Indian Tamil-language biographical film based on the life of Subramania Bharati starring Sayaji Shinde, Devayani and Nizhalgal Ravi. The film was directed by Gnana Rajasekaran[2] and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil for the year 2000.

During his days as a district collector, Gnana Rajasekaran was invited as guest for an event where a student suggested him to make a film on poet Subramania Bharati which created a spark in him and went to Coimbatore and read books about him.[1] The director wanted to cast Kamal Haasan in the lead role, but the film's budget did not allow it. So he chose Marathi actor Sayaji Shinde, who made his debut in Tamil cinema.[4][5] The dubbing voice for Shinde was given by actor Rajeev.[6]

The music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The song "Nirpadhuve" is set in Kalyani raga.[8] Sajahan Waheed of New Straits Times wrote "Isaignani Illayaraja showcases his three-decade experience in the Tamil music industry thorough this brilliant effort".[9]

Tamil Star wrote "Bharathi" may not be a commercial success. All said and done, with its superior quality it is certain that the film is bound to bag plenty of awards in near future".[6] Seetha Ravi of Kalki praised the acting of Shinde and other actors, Ilaiyaraaja's music, Thangar Bachan's cinematography and Krishnamoorthy's art direction.[12]

Renowned Tamil actor and writer Bharati Mani, who made a significant contribution to modern Tamil theatre, passed away on November 16, at his residence in Bengaluru, due to age-related ailments. He was 84.

After watching one of his dramas Kadavul Vanthirunthar (by Sujatha), Bollywood producer Bobby Baby who has made films like Bandit Queen and Mangal Pandey approached Mani for an English film made for BBC Channel 4.

In 2000, he made an entry into Tamil cinema through the film Bharathi and went on to act in nearly 40 films, mainly as a character artist. Some of his memorable films include Puduppettai, Anniyan, 36 Vayathinile, etc.

Having worked in the higher echelons of many public sector units, Mani has literally rubbed shoulders with many in the corridors of power, such as Indira Gandhi, RK Dhawan, Sanjay Gandhi, CN Annadurai, MGR, etc.

Having spent most of his life in Delhi, he had a different view of Tamil Nadu politics which is often seen through the lens of Delhi. Much of his views have been recorded in his two books namely Pulligal Kodugal Kolangal and Paattaiyavin Pazhangathaigal. Particularly, his take on anti-Hindi agitations and the impact they caused is interesting.

In another article, Mani shares his relationship with Prof Balraj Madhok, who co-founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), precursor of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1951. Mani used to be his student while he was studying at PGDAV College in Delhi.

The Great Poet Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathiyar lived his times in utter poverty & died unsung in his times. When one reads his poems the reader is sure to experience goose bumps! Such a spirited Poet that he was, his untimely death in 1921 at a very young age of thirty nine, drew only a handful of mourners in his funeral procession!

However, unintentional of the Great Poet Bharathi, some of his beautiful poems later turned into film songs, set to mellifluous music compositions by noted Music Directors & rendered by top Artistes in various time frames.

But, going back in time travel, very many films have had Bharathiyar written songs used in various filmy sequences. It all started with AVM who pioneered the way to copiously use Bharathi songs in his films (as he held recording rights for the songs) such as Naam Iruvar (1947), Vedhala Ulagam (1948) & Vazhkkai (1949), all in the amazing music compositions of Sudarsanam. In fact even today, these songs are known in these very tunes that Sudarsanam composed them in.

The film ezavathu manithan had lots of bharathiyar songs. For a kannamma song AMALA had danced in a film in the 80s. Daivathin deivam had lannan mananillyayay song. In sindh bairavi there was manathil ruthie vendum song
