Timeto Kill (Italian: Tempo di uccidere) is a 1989 Italian drama film starring Nicolas Cage, and Italian actors Ricky Tognazzi and Giancarlo Giannini. It is directed by Giuliano Montaldo. The film is set in 1936, when Ethiopia was under Italian invasion, and was filmed in Zimbabwe.[2][3] It is based on the novel with the same name written by Ennio Flaiano.[4]

Lieutenant Silvestri suffers a toothache and decides to head to the a camp hospital at a nearby construction site. En route to the camp his vehicle has an accident and stops near a rock; Silvestri continues by walking, but no physician is found at the construction site. He is directed by a young man on an allegedly shorter route to the main camp, and on his way through the jungle he meets and rapes a young Ethiopian woman. She stays with him afterwards and he gives her his watch as a present. While they take refuge in a cave Silvestri shoots at a hyena, but the bullet ricochets and hits the woman. He buries her, trying to hide all traces, observing some Ethiopian people arriving nearby. Silvestri continues to the dentist at the main camp, where he tells the story to his superior, who decides to do nothing.

Later his unit kills people in retribution for attacks by insurgents in the area where he recognizes among the dead various civilians he observed the previous day. He also meets Elias, wearing Silvestri's pants (which he seems to have forgotten at the site), and Johannes, Elias' father.

He finally receives news that he has been granted a furlough, but while celebrating with his friend and a superior officer he learns that the white turban of the girl means she was leprous. This and a festering wound on his hand lead him to believe he has leprosy. He seeks out a doctor with the cover story of researching for a book. The doctor explains to him all the signs of lepra, which convinces and horrifies him even more. When the doctor insists on examining his hand, he gives the doctor a false name, and even shoots at him, before boarding the ship to Italy.

As he tries to return to his wife in Italy, Silvestri evades and even steals from his former and finally hides at the father of the girl, Johannes. After he lives through a real or imagined illness, Johannes explains to him that Mariam wasn't ill, and in exchange he tells her father how she really died, leading him to the burial site.

When the bandits attack, Fellows blows up a bridge on their way to town. They attack from other directions against the citizens waiting in prepared positions. After a lot of casualties on both sides the bandits reach the bank and make their way into the vault, where Fellows has prepared a barrel of explosives connected to the telegraph line. When a signal is given that they are inside, Fellows orders the telegraph operator to start sending, and the remaining bandits are killed in an explosion.

Kennebeck did not take part in the attack, but when he learns about the outcome he arrives to fight Fellows. He challenges him to drop the rifle with the telescopic sight. When his two remaining men appear, and are killed before they can shoot, Kennebeck goes for that rifle but is shot by Fellows through the sight.

When the military troop arrives the banker discloses that the gold has been disguised as the new stairs of the bank. Fellows is paid and leaves. On the road he observes the military transport being ambushed by another gang of bandits, and grins.

In his investigation of narrative structures in Spaghetti Western films, Fridlund writes that Per il gusto di uccidere, unlike influential Spaghetti Western films like For a Few Dollars More or Django, presents a protagonist who is always in control. The developments never put him at the mercy of any villain, so he is never subject to torture. He does not go out of his way to pursue a second motive, and his choices do not put any loved ones of his in danger. However, these kinds of complications are not missing, but instead befall other characters in the story.[5]

Per la precisione, nel titolo originale l'uccello citato il mimo settentrionale (Northern Mockingbird), una specie di tordo non diffusa in Europa quanto lo in America: in italiano si tradotto con usignolo, tordo o passero.

Il titolo originale, To kill a Mockingbird, [riprende] un passo durante il quale l'uccisione gratuita di un bracciante viene paragonata a come quando si spara agli uccellini per divertimento, un gesto di pura malvagit. Io ho utilizzato questa metafora per descrivere l'olio e la cattiveria che ci erano stati gettati addosso durante il periodo di Troupe D'Elite. Noi siamo usciti quando avevamo diciott'anni ed stato un massacro, ci sono venuti addosso in tutte le maniere. Noi eravamo assolutamente innocui, facevamo quello che tutti stanno facendo adesso, noi la trap l'abbiamo fatta nel 2012, 2011. Poi una componente del gruppo era una ragazza, quindi figurati l'ignoranza che scaturita contro di lei. Fu un qualcosa di assolutamente gratuito: non offendevamo nessuno, non colpivamo nessuno, non danneggiavamo nessuno, per l'internet ci ha odiato perch facevamo qualcosa di diverso nel panorama rap in Italia e avevamo molto visibilit.
