Work began by Production Studio 4 after Executive Producer Shinji Mikami convinced Team Little Devil to re-title their own Resident Evil 4 prototype, which became Devil May Cry. The game went through an overhaul after TGS 2002, and was succeeded by the "Hallucination" version. Other nicknames for this game used by the media include "Fog", "Mist" and "Airship".
Development began in 2001 following an internal shake-up in Production Studio 4. An earlier Resident Evil 4 project directed by Hideki Kamiya was retitled Devil May Cry after Executive Producer Shinji Mikami pushed for it to be removed from the franchise. While that game was devised as a re-introduction of the franchise for a new console generation, Mikami felt it strayed too far from the formula both in story and mechanics.
In Resident Evil 4, you play as Leon S. Kennedy, the protagonist from Resident Evil 2. Now working as a US government agent, Leon is dispatched to an secluded European village after a sighting of the president's daughter, who has disappeared.
Resident Evil 4 also had a famously tricky birth, and went through no less than three revisions before it was finally released. Besides the aforementioned Devil May Cry version, there were also iterations that featured Leon fighting standard zombies, and yet another with the character being chased around a gothic castle by a fog monster while hunting down Umbrella founder Oswell E. Spencer.
Years after the horrors of Raccoon City, Leon Kennedy makes his Resident Evil return in Resident Evil 4. Leon is tasked with the mission to rescue the President's daughter, Ashley Graham. However, what appears to be a straightforward mission turns out to be anything but. Leon's mission in RE4 differs greatly from his previous outing in Resident Evil 2, since RE4 begins a huge shift in the Resident Evil series by placing the camera over Leon's shoulder, a change from the static camera of previous Resident Evil games while also gearing the combat toward being action-based rather than horror-based.
The development of RE4 wasn't smooth sailing, however, as RE4 went through many revisions. One of the attempts at making RE4 would actually be repurposed and released as Devil May Cry, kicking off another popular Capcom franchise. Thankfully, the RE4 that would eventually release for the GameCube was nothing short of amazing.
@Mgalens it's probably just because nemesis was my first resident evil game & one of the few games I had for the PS1 I was always terrified when nemesis showed up & it gave you the option to run or fight always chose run lol
