After two absolutely fantastic days in Arenal, it was time to head to our last destination for our week-long family adventure in Costa Rica: Rio Celeste. We had heard about the Rio Celeste Hideway, a gorgeous resort tucked away within the jungle surrounding the Rio Celeste, from a good friend of mine who spent a year living in Costa Rica with her family. This part of Costa Rica is not as well known however the Rio Celeste is world famous for its magical technicolor turquoise waters. The color of the river is like nothing I have ever seen anywhere on earth. It is so brilliantly blue that it looks surreal or like something out of a Disney movie. Just to see the Rio Celeste is worth the drive north.

We left Parrot Hill Ranch after breakfast and drove back to La Fortuna to drop off the rental car. We would not be needing it for the rest of our trip as we had a driver picking us up for the short 2 hour ride to Rio Celeste. We were happy to leave the car and not have to worry about driving anymore. (Our route below: We traveled from E to F).

Our drive took us through many small towns, farms and tiny roadside markets. As we approached the long drive up the hill to our hotel, Alfredo pulled over and bought us some fresh coconut milk to try. The farmer opened it on the spot and stuck a couple straws inside for us to drink. Its creamy watery taste hit the spot.

We arrived at Rio Celeste Hideaway just in time for lunch. Since we would not have a car for the rest of our stay and we were staying in a fairly remote location we were beyond pleased that the food at the resort was absolutely delightful. We always had service with a smile, and ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at the gorgeous open-air restaurant. Besides standard American fare, they also served Tico food and I enjoyed my rice and beans each morning with eggs and fresh sour cream.

The stunning turquoise-color of the water was like nothing I had ever seen before. It was so translucent and pure. I wanted to desperately dip my feet in the water and take a swim but alas the kids preferred to head to the pool.

The next day we would take a tour of the park and learn all about why the river has such a unique color. Then, we would go river tubing. Our adventure in Costa Rica was not quite over yet. We still had two jam-packed days of fun ahead. We could hardly wait.

We stayed at the Rio Celeste Hideaway and our family of four fit comfortably in an upgraded casita. They offer different packages based on your needs. We chose the family package which included some fun extras. To learn more, click here.

Thanks Di!One thing I really miss during the wintertime is fresh produce. In Costa Rica everything is so fresh and tastes so much better than what we have here. Minnesota is known for its tomatoes and fresh sweet corn which usually peaks in a few weeks.

I came across Celeste while trying to find a way to backup my linux folders to proton drive. Celeste is a GUI that uses rclone to backup file to proton drive. They have a Flatpak and a snap and are working on an appimage. I just thought you guys might be interested in it.

Rio Celeste is undoubtedly one of the most incredible places in Costa Rica. This sky blue river in the Tenorio Volcano National Park enchants visitors with its stunning color and beautiful waterfall, making it a must see.

Below you will find how to get to Rio Celeste from Bijagua, how to get to Rio Celeste from Liberia and how to get to Rio Celeste from La Fortuna. I also added Playas del Coco and Tamarindo since I know a lot of people are interested in doing a day trip from those destinations. This is for people who are renting a car which is the best way to visit Rio Celeste on your own as there are no public buses or shuttles directly to the national park entrance.

You will need to head east out of La Fortuna on Route 142, and then turn left onto Route 4. This road has a lot of signs so make sure you follow the signs. At first, follow the ones to Upala and then you will start seeing Tenorio Volcano National Park, Rio Celeste and Bijagua. This is one of the few routes where I recommend to follow the road signs instead of Waze. Waze kept trying to turn us onto the old road, which is on a not so good road and took much longer.

This route is very easy. All you have to do is drive from Playas del Coco to Liberia and then follow the same directions from Liberia. Playas del Coco to Liberia is about a 40 minute drive on an easy route.

Three questions drive Celeste Ng, a literary powerhouse with three novels to her name: What is the nature of legacy? What is does it mean to belong or to feel other? And what is the role of art and what are the limitations on its power?

Another student asked Ng about the role of pain and trauma in art. Ng, who has been open about experiencing depression in college as well as post-partum depression, said there is still shame attached to seeking help or admitting to mental health struggles, particularly in the Asian American community.
